What is a URM???

Mike: Have you heard of Google? It should be your best friend.

Underrepresented minorities (URM) refers to American racial and ethnic groups like Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans (particularly Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans) who are underrepresented in a college compared to their prevalence in the U.S. population.

I have restricted access due to my location hahaha THANKS… would being Afghan be a URM??

EDIT: I ask this b/c although it is in Asia it is underrepresented?

No. URM refers to racial and ethnic groups from The United States of America.

I am afghan american? just a question out of curiosity due to college apps thanks!

If your American parent is African American (black), Hispanic (Latino) or a Native American (Indian), then yes, you would be a URM. Otherwise, no.

So blacks, hispanics, and native americans are the ONLY URM considered??? My parents are from Afghanistan so that is a under represented minority (being afghan american myself) correct???

According to the common app, Afghan = middle eastern = white. Unfortunately, you are not a URM

That is what I was wondering though??? In american’s eyes afghanistan is in the middle east, but its actually in the center (or “heart”) of asia… thanks for clearing things up guys… I just don’t want to lie on my apps hahahahaha :)

Even if Central Asian were considered the same thing as “Asian,” it would probably hurt you since Asians are an over represented minority.

Heyyyyyy us Afghan Americans gotta stick together
You Pashtoon??? :)
