<p>Can i ask why someone would pick UROCH over either of the other two? Well thats what my kid is doing-He is an intended mech engineer-Cheapest is obv maryland with RPI and URoch coming in at the same price-with merit awards-Advice?</p>
<p>I’m biased as an RPI alum, but I don’t see why he would pick U. of Roch over RPI for engineering, certainly not for the same money.</p>
<p>If you were talking about RIT vs. RPI, then maybe it’s a debate. If you have to borrow a lot for RPI vs. U of MD, then it’s also a debate.</p>
<p>Maybe your kid is not really sure of engineering? Turned off by Troy? Is there a girlfriend influencing the decision?</p>
<p>I wish i knew-no girlfriend; He applied to URoc as an extra we were told by his school it is a better program than RIT; he wants a city with stuff to do so I’m walking around in a daze as to why Rochester is a better option than Troy/Albany -He’s only going into math, physics or engineering-not medical nor law so got me-RPI and UROC will cost the same-except for traveling to URoc Maryland is obv cheaper -he got merit from all</p>
<p>Well, I just looked at USNWR on-line and they have U of Roch #37 and RPI #41 among national universities. They have RIT as a “regional university”, whatever that means. Maybe it’s just that simple for your son and the guidance counselor. </p>
<p>But I feel somewhat familiar with engineering schools and it’s hard to believe, impossible to believe, that U of Roch is really better than either RIT or RPI for engineering.</p>
<p>As a university U of Roch might rank higher but I agree with you RPI is a better school for engineering, math it offers more and is more competitive</p>

<p>RPI is better than URoch for engineering. UMCP is pretty good too so if he doesn’t mind College Park, then UMPC is the best option. Maybe he wants to get away from home? Then RPI definitely.</p>
<p>I don’t think RPI has a minimum GPA for its merit scholarships.</p>
