UROP + Transfer

So as an incoming transfer I received a UROP letter. I read over it, checked out the site and what not and was not that impressed. Although I cannot see the full list of research programs available, most seem STEM related (again, heavy emphasis on the fact they only have a small sample of research programs shown, even though they say they have 1000s) .

So the first questions is, whether its worth applying and doing as a transfer? depending on what I major (or double major) into, would it be wise to just focus on my concentration and not waste my time @ UROP?

With work study granted, should I just use it and work a small college job? Food for thought Works study apparently works for UROP (does that make a difference?)

If anyone has any experience on this subject would be great to hear your point of view.

Thanks.

It is really up to you whether or not to have that research experience. It is mostly for STEM where research opportunity is obviously more available. You don’t have to participate in UROP, however, it does provide an opportunity to have a taste of research. It may be good for those who may want to enter the field, as well as those who will never have a chance otherwise.
I had several UROP students before and they had all different background. My D was looking into that and also applied to the MRC residential program as it is a good way to do work study. For STEM students, it is good to have that bench experience before applying for internship and also get to know a professor better that one may need recommendation down the road.

hmm, never thought about that day when I will need a prof req, good point.
