Hey frnds, i am mew to cc, so just a random question
can an indian middle class family earning 5 lpa even think of a us bachelors degree?

Difficult if you have to pay on your own.

Possible if you get a scholarship. But scholarships are hard to find.

Maybe if you are an exceptional and excellent candidate, some higly selective universities offer Full aid and are need blind. Need Blind is that they do not consider your ability to pay while considering your application. But I think those are very few and highly selective colleges with an admit rate of 5% or less.

anialways have a look at my stats n chance me n remember dat i need a big aid + i can afford a loan of $47k dat makes around $11k/year.

Why take so much loan for undergrad. My advise would be to get your undergrad degree here in India and take that loan for a Master’s degree from US. That way you make yourself more employable and reduce your risk and on top of that are allowed to work while you study and your OPT time is also lenthier ie. the time you are allowed to work while you wait for your H1 B visa. And a Master’s dgree opens many more doors for employment both here in India as well as elsewhere in the world.

I respect ur views #anailways but the loan is very light because it has to be paid in 12 years after i get a job! so it won’t be a burden for me!
also i m applying to only to those colleges which give the most aid to intl student. and my to choice is cornell which has scholarship for indian students!!!

I come from an upper middle class family too…and let me assure you. .you should apply. …keep a few safeties in India as well just in case …but otherwise go for it with all your might. …if you need anything info regarding the basics you can pm me or visit my blog cuttocollege.■■■■■■■■■■■■■

by the way I am a hs sophomore and have been in college admissions circuit for a while.

By upper middle class u mean that ur parents must be earning around 10 lpa or sumthin.
btw i have A few safeties in india as well…nt d IITs but other famous univ n i am pretty sure dat i will get into one of those! but u knw abt indian univ…they don’t teach instead thy train u how to get a highly paid job before the final year n their edu sys is not flexible not a bit! dats wy i want to get into some gud univ in us because it has the “thing” that i want! n don’t forget the aid! :-D

I am not saying for one minute you should not apply. All I am saying is that if you are going to take a loan it would be more worthwhile to take for a Master’s degree. Of course, it is your money…your decision. You have to pay it back. A better and well paying job will help you pay back much faster and be easy on your finances as well. And a post grad will increase both your employbility and pay packet.

anialways now i got ur point

But i’ve heard dat in india, masters dgree are for those who didn’t performed well in their bachelors dgree!

Hello…please reply!!!

no …it’s not true AT ALL. Masters is for those who are not limited to just mediocre undergrad. …for those who want more. …who want to learn. …who want to accomplish something. .make a difference. .and be Awesome! !!!
and yeah, finances are the worst part of American undergrad education. …fin aid is something you can’t prepare. …not that I know of. …and it is that edge on which our odds of going to the states for undergrad depend. …

I think Master’s degree would help you jump ahead in your career by roughly about 10 years and sort of double your pay package as well.

And cost of 4 year undergrad is about the same as a 2 year Master’s degree. That is my understanding.

So a lot of students do undergrad in India, work for 2-3 years and then go on to do MBA/MTech and likewise from a great university.

So, is there fin aid for mtech applicants? if yes then how mch as compared to ug applicants?

I would not be able to give you an answer to that. But you can google information on your own. it is not so hard. All the info is out there. If I find something I will send you the links.

Thank u anialways, btw, are u an indian?
