I'm currently a Junior in high school thinking about going to UoT to major in econ. Is it a good idea? Is there a better major I should take? Preferably I'd want to come back to the US for a job and take an internship while in Canada.

I don’t know much about economics, but it sounds very practical. Business is always good too.

From what people say, you should go to college where you want to get a job, but I am planning on defying that. The thing is that whatever Uni you end up at, it’s going to be better known the closer you are to it. Most people I know say “Oh, they have a University in Toronto?” or something like that because I live in California. Although UofT may provide a better education, employers prefer names they know. That being said, you have to just consider an unknown Uni as a minus and weigh your other options.

As far as I can tell from the online world internships are easier to come by in Canada, especially Toronto, but I don’t know if that’s true.

Uni students on average change their major three times, so it’s important to make sure that you like the University you end up at even if you switch majors. Choose a University for the University (location, general atmosphere, price and equally major) instead of choosing a University for a specific major. Make sure you want to be a huge University in a big city. (I know I do.)

Anyway, hope that sort of answers your questions.
(It could be significantly cheaper to go to a state University that would be better known to employers depending on what state you live in, UofT can be on the expensive side for International students.)

While Economics might be the marquee degree to go for in terms of business, in Canada that degree is a Commerce or Business Administration degree.
