Hey,

I've been studying for the US History SATII for about 2 months now. I'm using the Kaplan book and I've read through all the chapters and took 3 of the 4 practice tests, pacing myself as I go along. I'm also taking an amazing U.S. history course in school. That being said, my practice test scores aren't that great. I'm aiming for at least a 750, and I'm really good at history. I have a feeling I'm not studying right. Is route memorization the only answer? Any tips?

Thanks!

take a real sat ii practice test and see how you do.

Contrary to popular belief, history is not simply the memorization of facts. The key to truly understanding history, and the key to doing well on history tests, is to understand cause and effect.
I find that the best way to do this is to turn the subject matter into a series of stories. Instead of just recounting dates and names, learn to tell a story with the information.

the Kaplan book is good....

if you are in APUSH that helps a lot -- read the AMSCO book for APUSH and that should prepare you well

Thanks for the suggestions! I definately agree that route memorization isn't the way to go, and the cause effect thing makes a lot of sense. I'm definately gonna by the AMSCO book since I know it will help me with APUSH too!

Go to either Amazon or Half.com to buy AMSCO. Most of the time it's not available, but some times a decent used one can be found under $20.

You better hurry up because the AMSCO book is pretty lengthy.

I'm using a AP US history book. I already took the AP and the class, so I'm just goign to do some quick review and hope the AP over prepped me for the SAT II.

There are slight differences between this exam and the US history exam. There is a lot more "general trends" kinds of questions on the Sat II exam as well as demographic questions. That occasionally trips people who even took the AP class up.

^^I took the May 5th SAT II, I'm retaking it because I don't think I will be happy with the score. Anyways, I thought the AP MC was much easier, the SAT II had too much quotes and cartoons.
