I went through the entire list. There seem to be more and more ties every year. It’s almost like they don’t want to offend a school by dropping them, so they will give a group of schools the same ranking.

Good for Fordham, though.

This year, it’s nice to share the spot only with BU at #53, as opposed to last year, when we had to share spot with several other schools at #56. I am also very happy that Fordham finally and rightfully so, surpassed Syracuse in rankings…it was long due.

The business school did not fare well at all this year - another big dropoff - that wasn’t mentioned in the school’s press release.

Give it some time, Happy. The US news rankings haven’t even accounted for the name change yet (Gabelli). There are great things for the business school to come. Also, I wouldn’t put much weight on business rankings for U.S. news. In case you haven’t looked at the methodology, rankings are entirely based on surveys given to business school deans and senior faculty, of which only 40% responded. They do not account for average SAT score, acceptance rates, job placement, facilities, etc…so I wouldn’t put much weight on these rankings…the entire ranking is based on the perception of several deans/faculty. It makes no sense to me that Baruch #55 and Fordham is #81. Anyways, Fordham is getting a new $36 million building, and have recently received $25 million and $20 million donations in the past year alone. They finally have a name (Gabelli School of business) and will slowly start getting the recognition. IMHO, they should be a top 30 business school for sure.

starbury - I am a big Fordham fan – my son is very happy, doing well, and learning a lot. I’m a CPA so I know the school has a fine reputation, particularly in NYC. I don’t give the USNWR rankings much credence at all --in all my years of work, nobody I ever met has asked how high a potential employee’s college was rated before making a hiring decision! The rating is primarily used by nervous parents looking to pick the most prestigious college for their kid. Nonetheless, I believe that the very significant drop in the rankings over the last few years (I believe the business school was rated in the 30’s when my S started) is indicative of a certain level of dissatisfaction – that something at Gabelli is not working as smoothly as it should. For example my S has been stuck with night classes at times because there were not enough daytime sections of a class. He has had a couple of adjunct professors who work full time and were not great teachers (he has had a number of outstanding professors as well). The five year master’s program at LC and looks like an expensive mess with lots of night classes. I’m sure the new building will be great, but I hope somebody in Fordham’s administration takes the time to see if there are underlying problems at Gabelli that should be addressed.

Happy - Are you referring to the BusinessWeek rankings, because US news has never ranked the business school higher than 80 before. Yes, Fordham was a top 30 school on BusinessWeek before (now 50 something, I believe), but I think that magazine is a joke. The rankings fluctuate like anything, and none of their rankings make sense. They rank Notre Dame, UVA, and Emory ahead of Wharton. NYU Stern has fallen all the way to 15 from being in the top 5; how do you justify that…has anything fundamentally changed at NYU or does that reflect that the level dissatisfaction has increased? I think Gabelli is on a great track…they just had the best incoming freshman class of all time (highest GPA, SAT) and they’re going to get an amazing building. Gabelli’s SAT average was also the highest out of all other colleges within Fordham this year; opposite used to be true a few years ago when the business school had one of the lowest SAT averages within the university. Thus, I don’t think anyone can justify a drop of 30 spots…Fordham is only improving and I just cannot see dissatisfaction increasing to such levels or any fundamental change in Fordham’s philosophy or reputation. With the donations the business school has been receiving, they’re hiring distinguished faculty chairs ($2 million a chair, I believe) and recruiting the best students from high school via scholarships. I am pretty sure the business school experience has not decreased in the last few years…if anything, it has vastly improved.

Pretty awesome. Good job, Fordham. I’m sure they will only get better as time goes by.

I am pretty sure that the business school was ranked in the 30s in the USNWR ratings, but in all honesty, it could have been the BW rankings. If that is the case, I apologize for my error in memory. As I stated earlier, I agree that Gabelli has a ton of positive qualities and the school should get better with the new building dedicated to business. Overall, my son’s experience at Fordham has been really good. But there is room for improvement. I continue to believe that the administration should take the time to study the reason behind any major drop in ranking, not because the ranking itself is important, but because it is an opportunity to uncover ways to improve the program and increase student satisfaction. There is always room to get better. In any event, in the business world a school’s long standing reputation is much more important than an annual ranking.

I am suprised that the business school was not ranked better. I work in NYC and my firm hires a lot of people and definitely Fordham Bus grads fare better than the ranking would indicate.

I’m a Fordham student and recently with some people on the administration about the US News Rankings, they feel that Fordham is better than any of the schools in the 40s. I think thats bit of a bold claim, but do feel its better than some schools like Tulane, RPI, and Yeshiva.

As I have said before, the methodology of US news business rankings is so flawed, that there is little Fordham can do to control year-over-year changes in rankings. 40% percent of the deans from business school respond to the survey, and 100% of this weight is given to to the rankings. I think looking at the overall US news rankings makes much more sense. If the SAT average, facilities, faculty, and recruiting had any weight in these rankings, then I do not think that the administration’s claim they they deserve to be ranked in the top 40 is far-fetched. The business school is among the strongest schools that Fordham University has, so the business school being ranked lower than the overall ranking (#53) makes little sense to me (if you want to use that logic). I have been right before if you look at the history of my posts regarding prediction of Fordham’s rankings, and I believe in the next three years, the overall ranking will increase to #45, and the business school will start being recognized as the top 25 school in the country.

The amount of donations the B-school has received in a single year ($68 million, I believe) is unprecedented. The business school now has a name and by next year, will have its own building. In just a few short years, the business school has gone from having one of the lowest SAT average within Fordham to the highest. In a few years, I see the SAT average increasing to 1350 due to all the donations for scholarship, positive media press, and attention the school has been receiving… a lot of prospective students are now being attracted to the school.
