US News Ranking 2011

Many predict NU's ranking is going up this year- coming out tonight.

and not sure of its validity, but its ranked 10 according to a source on the us news thread....

It’s valid all right. We have two independent sources saying the same thing.

Congrats to Northwestern. In the top 10 for the first time in a while.

woo!
go Northwestern!

Actually, it’s kind of unfortunate. You’re going to have to deal with people saying “Northwestern is SOOO overrated” for the entirety of next year. Same with Columbia.

Actually, I think Northwestern has been ranked as high as #9 back in the 90s…

Ah… Regardless if NU is ranked #9 or #22, as long as NU is #1 in our hearts, we’ll all be ok.

But I have to admit at the same time, that Mel Brooks’ words of wisdom, “It’s good to be king” makes a lot of sense!

Go Cats!

Can someone post the link when it’s up please?

well Morty said his goal was to get us to #8…looks like we are well on our way! (he is responsible for getting Williams to #1 in the LAC rankings, so I have total faith in him). Go U, NU!

Nah, people always say that about any school. If NU goes up good. If not, fine too. The type to be attracted to NU is socially well-adjusted enough not to get worked up about rankings anyway. If you bash the school in real life, I’m sure we would just brush it off :)

Nooo I don’t want them to go up, that means more people applying just because of the new prestige it has.

Just to let you know…

The original list may not be correct. A media outlet in Georgia has released contradictory results from the leaked list. The only thing we know for sure is the top 5. Keep tight until midnight.

Yeah, I didn’t believe it for a second. Every year, there are alleged leaks. Don’t believe everything you read, people, especially by random posters on a forum.

Hey folks, NU’s actual ranking is #12.

[Northwestern University - Best College - Education - US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/evanston-il/northwestern-1739)

Rankings make me laugh. How do they “really” explain a one point difference between Northwestern being tied for number 9 or staying at 12? One point is the difference maker between NU and Dartmouth/Chicago/Duke. It makes me smile. What exactly goes into that one point? What’s really laughable is how the difference between rank 12 and 5 is only three points whilst the difference between 12 and 13 is once again only three points. A methodology? Rankings (except for the really out-there ones like Forbes) have always seemed to me as premeditated. It’s like those people who conjure up these rankings already have their generalized list in mind and are simply adding new criteria, raising or lowering the percentage placed into a certain area, or fiddling in other ways in order to put “truth” to opinion. And people eat it up.

So where does that one point really come from? To put it bluntly, their asses.

:)

The sad thing is: people actually care about these things. NU sometimes isn’t really known about/recognized on the coasts, and that’s a shame. Through silly rankings like these, more people will hear/learn about/respect/apply to NU and it will make it a better place!

While it is stupid to split hairs over points and such, it does serve a purpose. And as long as we don’t fall, that’s good news for us!

As a Northwestern student from the Northeast, I can tell you that it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I mean, heck, among the intelligent ones in my class, they know how well respected Northwestern is, but in general, there is a lack of knowledge. I think NU needs to take a page out of Chicago’s playbook with their massive ad campaign. Over the last year or two at my public school, there was a big spike in terms of UChicago’s applications. They were part of conferences in the area, someone from admissions even came to my school to hold a little discussion for those those interested, and they forced you to take a look. The same thing goes for WUSTL: they held conferences, discussions, etc… While a fabulous school, it gets more recognition than it is sometimes warranted due to the fact that they run a vigorous advertisement campaign. While they may also overdue it, they send so many packets and pamphlets and information sheets through the mail that they grab your attention. In Pennsylvania at least, NU felt like it wasn’t pushing as hard. Physical distance really isn’t the problem - it’s mental distance. NU needs to refocus the minds of some of the brightest who may overlook it.

Sadly, I agree that ranks have become extremely important. They are more a publicity stunt than anything; the information which they actually reveal is minimal at best. There can be no true ranking, but when so many gung-ho parents/teachers/counselors/students use them as a tool (perhaps even a crutch) when applying to colleges, you need to play the game. That’s today’s society, today’s America unfortunately.

It is out. NW is ranked at #12. Chicago at # 9.

RANK
12 Northwestern University Evanston, IL
89 2010-2011 Tuition and Fees: $40,247 18,834 27% 4.4 96.8% 95.0% 1360-1530 90% 73.1% 6.5%

As internationals official ranking helps us a lot. Without the ranking I will never hear of Duke, dartmouth and northwestern

The point is that all of these schools are really the best of the best, and people who follow them closely are only splitting hairs which is demonstrated by how close each school’s score is from rank to rank.

One can only take the “science” of this ranking so seriously. Northwestern, ranked 12th with a score of 89, would have been tied with 9th ranked Duke/Dartmouth/Chicago if their score was one point higher at 90. MIT and Caltech sitting tied at 7th are only one point higher than this at 91.

Agree with you Arzachel, splitting hairs, not atoms. Does anyone really believe that any of these rankings tell us that Northwestern, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Hopkins, Duke, Penn, etc are really measurably “better” or worse than the other. If you buy into this, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you. But, as US News knows (not to mention Forbes, Newsweek, Business Week, WSJ, etc etc), this stuff sells. Big.
