Us news rankings 2011

^^ Not necessary imho!!

Many of the University of California System schools are established a century or more later than the Big Ten institutions with little capital $ (~1/10 of endowment compared to the Big Ten School), YET are ranked way higher!!!

Also, what’s up with USC - a school with same PA score as Michigan State (MSU) little over a decade ago when I was in college, is now ranked ahead of University of Michigan?! @_@" Talk about no midwestern love when compared with the sunshine Cali… lol

p.s. Anyone has the final words on high school counselor’s rating and yield be included on this year ranking? Thanks!

^^ I was referring to the overall academic depth and prestige. Ranking is more than student selectivity alone imho. MSU’s current PA = 3.4; however, its High School Counselor’s Rating = 3.9!!! Plus, now that USC is ranked higher than Michigan, you should instead do a comparison between the two and tell me how in hell could USC be ranked higher than UofM?? lol

In addition, both MSU and UofM are typical large public schools in nation, MSU has more than 2x undergrad student body and UofM with 10,000 more than USC. I seriously don’t get how SC could leapfrog over ~30 top schools in a span of ~10 years… So far as I am concerned, academically speaking, USC is at best on par with NYC imho.

p.s. As an Asian myself who graduated from California middle school (and brother attended Canyon High), many of the top Cali schools garner nearly 50% asian students who are good test takers - would spend the extra time and effort to prep or even re-take the standardlized exams that midwestern kids just won’t!!

Interesting phenomenon I’ve observed amongst my Cali’s friends and familes,

When asked: Why did you attend UCD, UCI, UCSB, UCR, UCSC (or even UCSD & USC)?
Answer: Because I couldn’t get into Stanford, UCB and UCLA.

Here in Midwest, when asked: Why did you attend Michigan, MSU, tOSU, Wisky…,etc.
Answer: Go Blue, Go Green, Go Bucks, Go Badgers!! ;p

Destiny!! lol

u guys have no idea about how good SC is…the president has been changed, and its not a party school anymore…plus, its hard to get in…well yea

Haha, I was waiting for another line with “And I couldn’t bear the thought of rooting for a “reddish” color for sissies. Imagine having to yell Go Cardinal or Go Crimson.” :)

(Revised)

Interesting phenomenon I’ve observed amongst my Cali’s friends and familes,

When asked: Why did you attend UCD, UCI, UCSB, UCR, UCSC (or even UCSD & USC)?

Answer: Because I couldn’t get into Stanford, UCB and UCLA. (honest ones) OR
Answer: Because it’s close to home.

Here in Midwest, when asked: Why did you attend Michigan, MSU, tOSU, Wisky…,etc.?

Answer: What do you mean?? It’s a great school!! (honest ones) OR
Answer: Go Blue, Go Green, Go Bucks, Go Badgers!! ;p

Words: School Pride & Destiny!! lol

Sparkeye,

Looking afar from Michigan it is difficult to see the enormous changes that have taken place at USC in the past years. The first thing is to change your perception of what USC was into what USC is now.

How can a university improve? All these things help a university gain in prestige and selectivity:

Enormous fundraising activity over a period of years. In 2009 USC was #7th in fundraising, passing some of the ivy colleges.

Raising standards for incoming students. In the last rankings SC was 20th in selectivity among national universities.

Adding huge number of new rising stars as faculty members and hiring established faculty “stars”. Many of these have won Fulbrights, Godel, Guggenheim, Academy, Pulitzer, Peabody, Emmy and Tony awards.

Reducing the number of freshmen admitted

Stressing multidiscipliary majors, which have interested certain high scoring applicants

Beautification of the campus with more fountains, flowers and green spaces

Lowering the student teacher ratio to 9/1. Classes are small for a major university.

Adding a new multimillion dollar student center for more campus social activities

New additions to the university library system

Much emphasis on Asia and the Pacific Rim. SC is the “hot” school in some sections of Asia. SC now has 17 active alumni groups in Asia.

Increasing scores of students:
Combined scores at Michigan ACT 29 SAT 1989
USC ACT 30 SAT 2030

Enormous building programs with new dorms, student center, incredible $100 million dollar School of Cinematic Arts, new buildings for School of Theatre, additions to the top notch Thornton School of Music and state of the art Viterbi School of Engineering complex.

Research grants have multiplied. Keck School of Medicine recently received a $56.8 million NIH grant, a donor contribution of $24 million and an Annenberg donation for scholarships to Keck of $5 million and $5 million to Annenberg School among others.

Personal attention to students. Personal notes, generous office hours, research interaction, mentoring and a the feeling of family.

The internet has made SC a bit “closer” in perception to east coast students

Here are few things from U.S. News (I realize everyone does not agree on this ranking, but students and parents do view the rankings).
Michigan student teacher ratio 15/1 USC 9/1
Average retention rate Michigan 96% USC 96%
Faculty resources Michigan 74th USC 27th (Higher is better)
Selectivity rank Michigan 24th USC 20th
Acceptance rate Michigan 42nd USC 22nd
Alumni giving rank Michigan 79th USC 7th

Strong alumni support of students by lecturing, mentoring, donating scholarships, providing internships, interviewing and membership in alumni groups

Generous financial aid programs

Merit scholarships, especially Trustee Scholarships

Visits to top private prep schools by alumni/staff to tell about the university. This has resulted in students coming to SC from St. Paul’s, Pace Academy, Phillips-Exeter, Punahou, Iolani, Harvard/Westlake, Country Day, Westminister, Harrow, Lovett, Brentwood and others of that calibre.

Leadership by the retiring President Sample

Signifcant increases in student fellowships such as Fulbright, Luce, Truman, Annenberg and Marshall.

In my opinion USC has improved the campus significantly, added important collections to the library system, vastly improved student selectivity, improved faculty quality and had outstanding leadership.

These are not extremely significant but the Princeton Review has USC listed now by both parents and students in their Top Ten “Dream Schools”. The Daily Beast selected USC as the fastest rising university.

Those are some of the main reasons SC has risen in perception. You may not agree, but many individuals do not realize there have been enormous improvements.

Hey *******,

Thanks for dropping me a note regarding to USC’s academic improvements over the decade. First off, I must tell you that I am no Michigan Alumnus. And if you truly believe in all that you’ve typed, I encourage you to post in public and have an in-depth discussion on this issue with the Michiganites here! Know that when a buckeye fan like myself rooting for Michigan over USC (even in academics), something is really wrong. Indeed, USC has come a long way, yet, Michigan has been there and done that for centuries, not to mention most of its majors are ranked ~top-10 in the nation. There IS a reason why the PA score of Michigan is That high 2nd only to the Ivies and perhaps Berkeley. Anyway, I am no expert on both schools, I was just curious that’s all. You are welcome to post my reply in public if you so wish. As I alluded to earlier, so far as I am concerned, currently, USC’s overall academics is at best on par with NYU imho. Have a G’day!

Thanks for the PM!!! :)

Completely off topic, but I think if anyone is interested in prestige among high school students in America rankings or anything of the sort, this seems to be a decent ranking. I’m referring to the counselor rankings of USNEWS.
[Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-counselor-rank)
Top 10

 1. Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Yale
 2. Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Stanford
 3. Caltech, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Berkeley, and UPenn
 4. University of Michigan…
 5. …NYU, USC…
 6. Michigan State University

“Know that when a buckeye fan like myself rooting for Michigan over USC”

Actually, let me take that back. I think I would root for Michigan over U$C, even though defending for Michigan in general is prohibited unless it’s OOC or bowl games for sparkeye… The fact of the matter is that both athletically and academically, Michigan does have the resources and the traditions that only a hand full of schools in the country could match. Sorry for going off the topic!! lol

i think those counselor rankings are more accurate than the other list

Christ, I come back to CC for a peek (in 4 months), and I see this thread with 30% of the posts devoted to Duke.

^Don’t bring it up lol. I’m glad things ended positively . I’ve even made peace with the infamous JohnAdams12 on Duke.

well said Sparkeye7 . . . you forgot to add, our football team ROCKS! UCLA students hate on us because we’re Trojans… FIGHT ON

Counselors based everything off of prestige, or how hard it generally is for students from their particular school to be admitted, and occasionally, the few self-selected students who come back and brag about how great their school is. They don’t have any inside information, and as screwed as is the US News Rankings, it is still better than counselor opinion (not to mention the sample of counselors is not nearly enough for a reliable ranking).

my school’s 10 spots higher in the counselor rankings so it’s a better list :D

Well, yeah. That’s kinda the point–I stated that before I posted. It pretty much is a solution to the “What are the most prestigious universities” threads I’ve seen around at CC. The subjective answers get beat down by others who disagree.
Now we’ve got a solid list.
Not only that, but I’m also glad that the “HYPSM” concept is broken (not even acknowledged). Note that Stanford is grouped with Brown, Columbia, and Cornell.

^^^Which makes it more ridiculous than the PA scores…

Wow, at last, the epiphany of rjkofnovi.

Easy to agree with “[it] is more ridiculous than the PA scores [are].”

A Stanford guy and a Duke guy encounter a grizzly bear while they walk in the woods. The Stanford guy turns his head and runs. The Duke guy says “you can not outrun the bear!” The Stanford guy says “But I can outrun you!”

^Where in the world did that come from?

The real question is, will Stanford’s basketball team ever make the Big Dance again or did the Lopez brothers just give the program a false sense of hope?
