US Veterinary Schools and Trinity Dublin

My daughter is keen on attending Trinity Dublin as a Zoology major. We are having trouble finding information to confirm if the curriculum there will satisfy requirement to any US Veterinary schools. Does anyone have any knowledge? She is top student at her school, scored high on SAT and has been working in a Vet clinic in NY. Is also considering Cornell CALS, Tufts, UC Davis but has heart set on Trinity for undergraduate.

Why not give her most of what she wants- Dublin- and apply to UCD Vet school directly? It is US accredited by the AAVMC.

She would have to have a 5 in AP Chem, and something in Math (high SAT subject test, AP AB or BC) and another science would be ideal (Bio strongly recommended), and be able to document “60 hours practical experience relevant to animal handling between 1 February, 2017, and 6th July, 2020”. It’s €30k/year tuition + accommodation (figure €10K/pa) x 5 years.

It is very likely that the course will not satisfy UC Vet prerequisites such as Organic Chemistry.

While Trinity is in Ireland not the UK, and I am not an expert on Irish education (Irish high school has leaving exams that are broader than A levels, and a bit more like the IB) university is definitely far more like the UK than the US, with few to no electives, a focused course and no major as it is understood in the US. You also can go directly into law and medicine, unlike the US. If she wants to go to Trinity, she should understand this. Check with the university, but I honestly think it would be very difficult to go directly from a Trinity zoology degree to a US vet school. She would probably have to take additional courses to fulfill requirements. This would definitely be the case with medicine. While there is now a joint degree between Columbia in the US and Trinity, but it is only for English, History, European and Middle Eastern studies, and languages possibly. But definitely not science. If she wants to be a vet and practice in the US, I would definitely recommend that she does her undergraduate in the US.

If she decides instead to apply directly to vet school at Trinity, she would also have to check that this qualification would be accepted to work as a vet in the US. For law school for example , the Uk undergraduate law is not accepted. It is possible to take a postgraduate LLM and subsequently sit the bar (I think this was done by Amal Clooney) but a degree in something like PPE, English or History followed by the American JD would be more usual.

Agree with most of the above, except that the UCD vet program is US accredited, so practicing in the US is not a problem (for a US citizen), subject only to the usual state licensing requirements (that apply to all Vet school grads). Note that Trinity does not have a Vet program- it’s at University College Dublin.

Sorry, I should have said direct entry University College Dublin then. I knew Trinity had law and medicine. University College is definitely respected, but it has mostly modern buildings on the outskirts of Dublin, not historic and in the center like Trinity. Also, you would have to think seriously about whether you want to give up a undergraduate science degree and just study to be a vet from day one. It would be very different from the US experience .

I have just looked into the latest information on the joint Trinity- Columbia degree and it appears they are trying to get a programme in biology or neuroscience approved. Although it hasn’t been yet. If this does go ahead, US medical or vet school after a joint Columbia-Trinity degree may certainly be possible. Perhaps she could look into this.

Sorry that I didn’t check the latest information before posting. Trinity is different from the US, but does appear to be trying to fit in more with US college education through the joint degree
