USA June 2011 SAT Critical Reading Thread

Pretty sure the answers are moralistic and appeal to authority

The question for “it is easier to teach adults, not children” asked how the author of Passage 2 would react to the author of Passage 1 who said something along the lines of children need the “right” to think freely. The author of Passage 2 indicated that while freedom of expression is important, the issue gets more complicated and “cloudy” when dealing with children and schooling. Thus, it is implied that the author of Passage 2 values freedom of expression but more in adults than children.

@pwdawggy- was the question for the teachers rejecting one?

for the bees and trees one, for the question about what technique does he not use, wasn’t the answer historical reference?

@pdawggy

Nobody is ever 100% sure. Just never happens; there’s always at least a sliver of uncertainty. Anyways, I do have to side with SAT12345. I also don’t understand why you think just because another person is not “100%” sure that your answer must be right.

for the teachers rejecting one i put “protecting from negative influences”

@pikachoo - appeal to authority

where was the historical reference

I thought the one with “What does tagged mean” was defaced, because it almost seemed like the students were being tagged as a bad thing for using restricted books… I might be completely wrong here though.

Recipient?

@pikachoo

I believe the historical reference was the “Incas and Mayans” portion of the excerpt.

What were the other choices for the “appeal to authority” one?

i knew i shouldve checked that one… omg

the historical reference was when she talked about the origin of the potato from incan/mayan/irish. Appeal to authority means to quote or use an authoritative figure to support your opinion. The author did not do this

What do you guys think the CR Curve will be for a -3? I took the March SAT and got a 740 with -3, and I thought this CR was harder…

-3=790 …char

Seriously? Wow, that would be freaking amazing, based on the fact that I think I got a 780-800 Math, and I already have an 800 writing from last test!

Why is the turkey one not catalyst, it said it increased the rate at which (insert word here) was produced, a natural _______

It increased the rate…the other word means sleep inhancer but what makes catalyst wrong?

Marinebio444

just making sure. you are saying that you got 3 wrong, or that you got -3 raw score?

because 3 wrong=-4 raw score which would be more like a 770

-3 is not the same as missing 3

If you miss 3, you will not get a 790 (this has never happened in past tests ever), because -3 is really -3.75 because college board is ■■■■■■■■.

Missing 3 is really like missing 4, which is usually more like a 760.
