Hey guys, I'm a rising sophomore with a lot of things on my plate. However, I figured I could take some time out of my sleep schedule and other things to study USABO. Am I going against people that have been studying since childhood? However, lets be clear, its not like I'll spend 15 mins a day and be done with it. If I put in a substantial amount of work into it, would it still possible for me to qualify for IBO and possibly medal? Thanks!

I have the same question too :]
I just started studying this summer and I’m scared that it’ll just be a fruitless effort.
As long as you have fun learning I guess…
haha

Yeah, I don’t wanna start something, and sacrifice all that time for absolutely no result…

Bumppp. Anyone???

Obviously you can do it.

Impossible is nothing.

Er, alright. But is it worth the enormous amounts of effort? Or should I pursue smaller competitions and things like that?

Also, is this the book: Biology with MasteringBiology (8th Edition) (MasteringBiology Series) ??? Because I might just order it from Amazon.

Hard work will always pay off. Even if you don’t make USABO, your studying can help in the future.
And you should try Campbell’s book.

Which one do I read??? Can you give me the exact name of the book?

Of course it’s possible. Everyone gets there exactly by utilizing that route (at least that’s the case for the US team).

Okay, that being said, everyone going to the IBO from the US has a natural propensity for studying biology, etc. If you’re starting from nothing (i.e. no proclivity or die-hard interest for biology), suffice it to say the shot is extra, extra small.

It is the book with the flower on it right? Biology by Campbell and Reece 8th edition with MasteringBiology?

Yeah, Campbell and Reece, I think any recent edition would do (I’ve the 6th edition at home).

Yea. I’ve compared the 4th with the 7th and there really is no significant difference. One has prettier pictures.

Alright, thanks everyone! But one more thing, on the CEE site it says to get the Biology 8th edition book, but when I googled it, it says Campbell 8th edition WITH Mastering Biology, is there a difference?

Bump! Cmon guys! Last Question

[edit] nvm.

Alright, thanks everyone! But one more thing, on the CEE site it says to get the Biology 8th edition book, but when I googled it, it says Campbell 8th edition WITH Mastering Biology, is there a difference? BUMP!

Yeah, you should get the 8th edition with Mastering Biology, just to be on the safe side. I just know that the Mastering Biology website has quizzes and tests you can take on the material. I’m just studying with the 7th edition though because I do not want to spend another 80 dollars on a textbook.

My friend was a USABO gold-medalist, and I am the president of my school’s biology club. I might be able to help you out. Message or email me.
