I really wish that I had taken the AMC 12s a little more seriously, now knowing that I want to aim at a top tier college, and qualifying for the AIME would definitely help me a lot.

But out of curiosity, how much would a AIME or USAMO qualifier matter in the college application? Would it count as a majorly significant achievement that separates the geeks from the men?

AIME qualifiers number in the thousands, as I recall.

American Invitational Mathematics Examination - AIME

Scoring above 5 on the AIME gets you in the national book published by the AMC every year.

getting into aime is HARD. getting into usamo is HARDER.

of course it would look good. but it's not something that can magically come.

well if I don't qualify for any national recognitions, is it worth it to say on the resume that I tried (like I've taken the AMC 12 and participated in mandelbrot)?

what's the point? anyone can take the amc12 as long as they pay a fee. but if you, say, got a perfect score on the amc 12, that's something you can be proud of and list.

i don't know what mandelbrot is so sorry can't help you there!
