Subjective:
ECs listed on app: College Baseball Player
Job/Work Experience: Cashier/Political Staff Member
Essays (subject and responses): For the first essay, I talked about the importance of politics and how I looked forward to participating in the Trial Advocacy Program offered at USC. The second essay, I wrote about the struggle I had in high school and how I worked my tail off through JC to get to where I am today. I should mention that I have yet to take a break from school since leaving high school. Every semester including summer and intersession has been filled with classes
Letters of Recommendation: Letter of Rec from CA State Senator Joel Anderson and my International Politics professor

Other:
Other schools applied to USD (Accepted)

Comments: I am the youngest of four and my father and mother are still married. My dad was born in Israel but I decided not to write about any of that in my essay and I encourage you to refrain from that as well. I heard that admission counselors are tired of the victim narrative so I decided to write about my passions. Like I said earlier I wasted no time getting my Associates and transferring from my current institution. If I could give some advice it would be a couple of things. Firstly, take as many classes as you can or how many you can handle. Make sure they are classes that will transfer so you dont waste your time. Take a class during summer and intersession I am telling you it was the best thing I could have done. Secondly, get involved in some sort of internship right away. Whatever you are majoring in make sure you apply for an internship so you can really submit a strong application. Lastly, apply for backup schools because USC is quite difficult to get into. Having a backup is always important and I recommend it for everyone who applies to schools with low acceptance rates.

] Comments: I usually check my portal a few times a day (in hopes that there would be a decision), but on this specific day I didn’t check my portal or college confidential until the evening. I was kinda having a rough week and thought to myself “I better not get reject” as if my day could get any worst. Lo and behold my portal was different and I instantly knew I got in. I was crying so hard and it was waiting to come out for the past two years. I literally found out when I was least expecting it and it felt like fate! I was planning to head to SFSU (literally the very next day) to declare my major, transfer credits, and basically trying to get my life together just in case I didn’t get in. It was perfect timing and I couldn’t be more ecstatic to become a trojan! Its been quite a long journey, but definitely worthwhile. Work hard for your dreams and it may come true! Fight on!!

Letters of Recommendation: 3 (1 was exceptionally good)

Other:
Other schools applied to: UCLA (accepted), UCI (accepted), CSUN (accepted), CSULB (waitlisted)
Comments: Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. For CC students - don’t worry if you didn’t apply to the honors program. My counselor told me that it doesn’t factor into admission at all. Just focus on keeping your GPA as high as possible (try to get an A in Business Calculus and get it done in the Fall, or else you’ll definitely get an SGR or rejected). Essays are not that important, unless you’re a borderline applicant. Finally, I received a VERY generous financial aid package although I totally didn’t expect it, so don’t listen to those people who say USC is stingy. Everyone is different – it’s a good idea to ask for others’ opinions, but take them with a grain of salt. Fight On!

A lot to think about. I love USC but I don’t really love the LA vibe. I am very conflicted about all the placement tests and the lack of housing, so I am really considering everything. I worked really hard to get my internships and school and extra curricular activities. If anyone has questions let me know! Congratulations and best of luck to everyone!

[
] Comments: So. Definitely wasn’t my GPA. Don’t think my essays were that captivating (nothing moving). Not a minority (maybe for my major?). I am a stand-out when it comes to research and internships, but I don’t/didn’t know if it was enough for USC. I hope my GPA makes other people feel better about their chances; I was prepared for bad news but I didn’t give in.

More details that might help: First time I called (at multiple places) I asked about adding additional activities after the deadline and got the go-ahead, so I’ve been constantly uploading new resumes (I put on my upcoming internship) as well as supporting info for bigger ones. Some of the ECs above I uploaded between April - May. Uploaded winter grades in advance, admittedly because they were better than fall grades.

What I DID do that I didn’t do in prior admission rounds was constantly upload new documents showing new activities, such as resumes, abstracts, etc. My admissions counselor (for USC and elsewhere) gave the okay and I have a strong feeling the activities I picked up in the past two months (mainly research) was the last drop in the bucket.

I hope this isn’t a double post because I messed up my original one, whoops.

[
] Comments: To any future applicants, I would highly suggest doing some research into your major at USC and find specific programs/clubs you would like to get involved with. You can write about this in your essays, which shows you are serious about attending USC and have a sense of what you are getting into. In all, just be yourself and show the admission counselors how passionate you are about USC. Some advice I would give is to keep your grades up and minimize the W’s. I initially had a very poor academic record at my CCC due to working full time, but soon found financial stability, which allowed me to go to school on a full-time basis. Needless to say, I got nothing but primarily A’s and a few B’s. My last piece of advice is to never give up on your dreams, especially if you have always wanted to attend USC. I never thought I would have this amazing opportunity considering I was rejected last year and did not have the best high school record. To those interested in attending this amazing university, put forth your best work and never give up! I hope you all feel the same joy and excitement as I did when I got my acceptance letter. Fight On!

For one I talked about my life and particular things I’ve gone through that make me who I am today and have steered my career goals. I also mentioned classes and activities (clubs/community service I wanted to get involved in). I also think I just gave a pretty compelling transfer story for the common app essay, which might have helped my lower than average GPA. Never under estimate the power of a good personal statement is all I gotta say.

For any prospective applicants for next year: Apply even if you think you won’t get an acceptance. I often thought it was a lost cause, but just make sure to present yourself in the best way possible and really own your story/accomplishments on your application in a genuine way. Do your research for sure, convince admissions that you’d be a productive member of the community, and take a chance!

] Job/Work Experience: Finance intern at my college (position offered to me by a professor I had who took a liking to me), operate eBay business.
[] Essays (subject and responses): Common app essay talked about a health diagnosis that I allowed to hold me back from going outside of my comfort zone and how it affected my school performance, and how I am not letting it hold me back any longer… Supplements, I talked about diversity of thought and how my views were constantly challenged in my club I formed in high school, and how it made me a more critical thinker and more well-rounded individual. Other supplement, I spoke about the alumni network, different programs Marshall has to offer, and how overall I am just the embodiment of the whole “Fight on!” school message due to my health diagnosis.

[/ul]Other:

[] Other schools applied to: Tulane (Accepted with highest transfer merit scholarship, but declined admission - too expensive). Sending out an application today to Rutgers - NB since they are still accepting applications.
[
] Comments: I WILL BE APPEALING. But take some ADVICE: For those reading this as transfer applicants from small 4-year colleges for Fall of 2019 admission, my advice is simply to plan well. I made a rash decision to apply to USC because of a health condition that was holding me back from going outside of my comfort zone. I was just working towards completing requirements off my school’s major’s 4-year plan. My school does not require the number of gen-eds like USC does for its students, so I did not have all of them completed. So again, if you are really unhappy, really plan out your coursework at your current institution strategically.

Best of luck to all of you! Pray for a successful appeal for me!
