USC Appeals 2012

Hey everyone!
Just wondering if any of you are appealing your admission decision?
If so, what do you plan on doing or mentioning?
If any of you past applicants, current students, or parents have any advice to offer, I would appreciate any you have to give. I know that the letter must include something new and compelling, but what exactly qualifies as "compelling"? Again, any ideas you have to share regarding any part of the process are welcome.

Thanks so much!

hey i’m thinking of appealing too! im gonna try and look stuff up about appeals and get as much info as i can so when i get a general idea of what most people say works or worked for them i’ll def post in here! and if anyone knows please respond it would help so much!

Well, admitting you have ADD didn’t help. My D and S (both current USC students) didn’t reveal this information- until D got deferred. While test taking… she always ran out of time. This “new” information didn’t help our situation. USC is all about test scores and GPA.

“USC is all about test scores and GPA.” this really upsets me ): i really wanted to go to usc but i got rejected. it really sucks!

I’m sorry to hear of your rejection stephanieatbeast, but remember that USC does take a holistic approach to their applications and that while test scores and GPA are very important, they are not the only things that matter. I’m really upset I didn’t get in too, but I’m gonna try and appeal and hope for the best.

@crazyysmileshan: research sounds like a good idea! i’ve done some, but yes, please please do post anything good you find!!!

stephanieatbest- I really feel bad for you. I want every kid to go to their dream school. My daughter transferred in as a Sophomore. If USC is where you want to go- you can make it happen. Good luck to you.

Rejected,

Probs due to my low stats 1860 SATs, 560 maths II (shocking!) 660 physics. but i had a strong extracurricular side. However i am using this as positive reinforcement to just push myself harder, after taking the sats in a decision that gave me a month to prepare i absolutely flunked. I am just wondering do transfer students submit sats score or is their academic side purely based on the grades they receive at uni? and what increases the likeliness of being admitted as a transfer student?

I also decided to send an email as a personal thank you to the admission office, i am sure that this will probably be ignored due to the busy time of year for them but i felt i needed to express my gratitude to them. anyways for now I will be a fellow dragon at Drexel Uni studying a physics major

Dear Kirk Brennan,

I am sure your inbox is packed with emails at this crucial time of admission selection, however I would like to personally thank you for allowing me the opportunity of applying to USC as well as reviewing my application fairly. I am not appealing for entry this year due to my annoyingly low stats however you will sure be getting a transfer application from me as I have an unfortunate inability to settle with the misfortunes life throws my way.

Thank you very much!
yours sincerely,
Douglas B

Don’t send that self-deprecating letter, please.

Yeah at least re-phrase it. You’re not a bad student at all and I don’t think it will help you in a few years. If you can’t resist the urge to send them something, I think they would appreciate it more if you came off as remaining strong and self-confident, using this minor setback as motivation to work all that much harder in the coming years. It’s kinda like you’re saying, “Sorry I suck, I’ll give it another shot in a few years because I hate feeling incompetent.”

Does anyone have examples of past successful appeal letters to share?

^Yes, any current USC students who were accepted on appeals have ex’s for us n00bs?

Would greatly appreciate, and safe to say so many others would appreciate as well

Guys, anyone knows the deadline for this? Thanks!

The deadline is April 11th.

Originally, on my application I had put down Cinema Studies as my intended interest. However, I had a significant change of mind and now I’m geared toward business and economics. My appeal is focused on how I drifted away from film and dove into economics and experiences that I’ve had with it. I mentioned how I gained certification in Adobe Premier Pro. I’m also a rap music artist and wrote about how I want to incorporate business and economics into creating a Record Label.

My GPA is a 3.6. to 3.7 and my ACT is 28. But I’ve taken various AP classes in different fields and have a pretty well-rounded transcript. I’d love an example of a successful appeal.

For those of you upset about notgetting inwith 1800 and 28 etc., I didn’t get in with a 33 ACT, top 5% of my class, editor in chief of newspaper, 2-sport varsity athlete, etc. It’s annoying bc I came to visit all the way from Wisconsin

didn’t get in with a 2140 sat…3.76…14 ap classes…state awards in math club, swimming, water polo, robotics, regionally ranked swimming and robotics…pres, vp, treasurer, of three diff clubs. swim coach and a bunch of other ec’s I’m too lazy to put. i don’t even care…i wasn’t gonna choose this school anyways

upward trend. btw…hence the low gpa. a 3.85 not counting frosh year

I was really bummed out too =/ I had a 4.4 weighted GPA, 32 on ACT, 750 US hist, 730 Chem, 900 hours of comm service, 2 internships, 1 job, president of 2 clubs, great teacher recc letters, etc…

arandom - yet your still on this page hahaha

Do you guys think that since USC switched to the Common App this year, there’s a chance that they might under-enroll a little an therefore take in more appeals than usual? Hear me out: last year they admitted 8,566 for about the same amount of spots as this year. This year they admitted around 8,400. Perhaps now with more admitted kids using USC as a backup (due to it being more convenient to apply) there will be less that enroll than the 35% yield they are hoping for? Thoughts? haha is there hope?

“USC is all about test scores and GPA.”
I have to disagree. My friend has a 4.0 and a 2400, and good (but not extraordinary) extracurriculars, and she didn’t get in. I know people (including myself) with slightly lower GPAs and scores but better extracurriculars who got in. So just know that they look at more than numbers! Good luck to those appealing!
