I was going to say the same thing @oPhilippos
Ditto. Many thanks to @WWWard and @CADREAMIN!
@pdxtigermom I would not read anything in to that. Technically, RHP as a program is housed within Dornsife… so that likely accounts for the origin of the email. But clearly not all RHP admits pursue majors limited to Dornsife. To quote them… “Once you arrive on campus, you will have plenty of time to explore different subjects and identify new or additional majors. The academic advisors in the Resident Honors Program and other academic departments will be here to help you shape your education.”
And to all posting THANKS… you are of course welcome.
@Drew2622 Apparently there is one! I had to dig for it on facebook so pm me with your name and some sort of proof i guess and I can add you!
Apologies if this has already been asked. It seems from the USC website that an applicant who is a NMF does not need to submit the FAFSA or CSS in order to be eligible for the 1/2 tuition NMF scholarship at USC. Is that correct?
@oPhilippos is the name of the group USC Class of 2022 (Official)? I just want to make sure I joined the right one lol
Thanks for thanks everyone! It is good to have something to do with some of the stuff I have learned having kids at USC the last 6 years, with 3+ years to go!
@13579x That is my understanding but I recommend putting in a quick call to financial aid or admissions to verify.
They will tell you if you are getting any loans like the Stafford, which even full pays tend to qualify for, you will need to have FASFA and CSS done.
FAFSA and CSS is certainly not my area of expertise. You may hold a bit, but calling (213) 740-4444 is always good to verify what is needed and not.
Does anyone now of a SCA 2022 thread? Thanks!
Know**
Also for any SCA applicants who would want to know, yesterday I spoke otp with an AO from SCA. She told they look for students who do something of the box on their application, That will get their attention. Personally I wrote my cinematic personal statement as a song…hopefully that helps my average sat and average gpa
@clowery Just this one…
@13579x yes, the NMF Presidential is not based on financial need, and you don’t need to fill those out to receive it. My son got this award and we did end up filling out the FAFSA very late (June?) just in case he qualified for any financial aid (which he didn’t–our EFC is high). I don’t think it was necessary though, and he was certainly offered the presidential without it when he was finally accepted to USC in March.
Just to clear up some confusion that we had and that I can see the entering class is also concerned about…NMS admits are treated exactly the same as other Presidential Scholars once they are admitted. (My son is one.) They get housing at McCarthy, get 1/2 tuition paid, get the same opportunities for exceptional funding, will host the next round of scholar invitees, etc.The biggest differences are that they have to wait until March to find out that they are admitted (torture!) and that they do not have the opportunity to be bumped up after the interview (because they don’t get one).
I’m confused about applying for housing. USC is my #1, but I’m not 100% sure because I need the full tuition to attend. I just got an email saying that the housing application will open tomorrow, and even if I didn’t submit my $300 deposit, I can apply. So should I? Do I need to submit a deposit to apply for housing?
@carmen00 , I was told that you can register for housing with a deposit of $55 but it will not be certified without paying the $300 which can be done later.
USC is a top 3 for my S, so it may be worth paying the $55 to reserve the housing at this point. Not sure if the $55 would put us ahead of those who paid the $300 from the start for the certified housing?
The $55 locks in your place in line, that is all you have to do to secure your spot. Recommend, although truthfully, honors kids don’t have much to worry about. But still, good to do.
Thanks @CADREAMIN. Do you or @WWWard know if McCarthy is full, do they put the freshman Honors students in the sophomore building for Honors students in the Village? What would you suggest as a second choice for an Honors student who would like AC and a dorm for two students max? We like our AC here in the South :-).
@Nomorelurker I am not sure how they would handle a scenario where they are filled up. But I also doubt that they would be full. The opposite occurred this year, and they let non-honor students in. While the Village units are now all A/C, that is not the case for many freshmen dorms or suites on campus. I know that Fluor and Webb have A/C. Some like Cardinal Gardens and La Sorbonne only have A/C in the living room… not bedrooms. You may want to look up each and make sure otherwise at: http://housing.usc.edu/
@WWWard @Nomorelurker Hmmm the brochure on housing shows McCarthy as no AC, which surprised me given they are brand new and very nice. Is this a mistake in the brochure?
Okay so just to confirm, accepted National Merit Finalists get the Presidential scholarship and get to live in McCarthy, which is part of the USC Village??? Because that sounds pretty wonderful
I signed my D up for housing at 9:00. Confirmation time of 9:08. I just went back on to look at the housing preferences on her application and most of the McCarthy options are no longer listed! The only ones still available are singles and the double loft rooms.
I hope 9:08 was early enough for her to get one of her top room choices. Yikes!
