USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

My daughter was accepted as a Spring Admit, but not to Viterbi as a CS major, but rather as an Open Major. Does anybody have any insight into how hard it is to get accepted into the program in this situation? She has been accepted directly into other CS programs at great schools, but USC is her first choice. We hate to pass up a sure thing if Viterbi is going to be next to impossible.

@lakergirl6232 Yes. Financials today.

@sushiiii DD received her FA, and we are in the midwest

@Bluepinksoccer Only as a freshman. But you are also guaranteed USC Housing as a sophomore too.

@CADREAMIN I sent an email and they said all scholarship results have already been released through email (including Deanā€™s, etc).

@ccak01 I am just an admit but have been doing lots of research into the internal transfer so take my answer with a grain of salt. Here are two useful links

I have been wandering the USC reddit and it seems that as long as you have above the 3.0 GPA requirement it is really easy to transfer in. Seems to be more about are you capable rather than limited space.

@jdi1234 Thank you, super helpful! I am sure some were wondering. We had one post about a Deans which could be indicative of smaller amount given or less people posting about them. Maybe both. We see posts about getting bumped out, but obviously not many thrilled to discuss getting bumped down.

But overall, way less quiet on Dean chatter, interesting.

@ccak01 Itā€™s easy, @jdi1234 did some good research, it is about gpa. If USC is #1, then donā€™t walk away for this. But take some of the same courses first semester like you are in CS major that are good to get done or are prereqs, the math and/or physics - call Viterbi directly, they will reassure you about this. Had CS grad last year, it is phenomenal program.

Of course, being worrisome parent, I think about all the risks - like kid gets mono or goes sideways for whatever reason and gpa tanks because of it, not such a big deal if already in major, but a problem if trying to get in. That may be looking at things too gloom and doomy though, so just a thought. After so many years of college kids and their friends, one hears it all, so I would be remiss not to share it.

Does anyone know about SCA scholarships? Anyone get one yet? Will we hear either way?

To all the posters who got little to no financial aid, my D didnā€™t get any either. 40000 would be hard enough.

Below is the USC tuition since 2010. At this rate we are looking at paying $60K in year 4. This is crazy.
2010 $41,022
2011 $42,818
2012 $44,463
2014 $48,327
2015 $49,464
2016 $52,283
2017 $54,323
2018 $56,225
2019 $57,256

@DrummerDad18 we are in the same boat.

And now it becomes clearer how and why the USC yield rate is only 41%. 59% or so will likely enroll elsewhereā€¦ and the # designated as the family contribution is a key reason why for many.

Weā€™re still waiting for FA. FAST app still in review,

Bummer, we were hoping to get FA notice before he leaves for Shipman Weekend to UofM.

What surprises some re aid, is that if you have equity in your home or any retirement plans, etc., those are assets that ā€œshould beā€ liquidated to pay for college expenses. Itā€™s money in the bank in their analysis as a CSS school. That usually accounts for the big difference with what FAFSA analysis shows.

@WWWard 41% really isnā€™t a bad yield. I saw today that Rice also targets a yield of 41%. Sure I bet a lot of that is $$$. Itā€™s tough because USC is a large private school and while it is said to have the largest overall financial aid, to provide the same guarantees that Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and some others offer would just take too much money at this point I think.

If switching into Viterbi is all about GPA, why did my child with perfect GPA and almost all perfect testing get admitted as ā€œundecidedā€ and now has to ā€œproveā€ themselves to get into Viterbi? It makes no sense. As I have another child already there in Viterbi, I am told that there are students with lesser records admitted directly to the program. Again, it makes no sense.

Does anyone know what a ā€œuniversity scholarshipā€ is and whether it is renewable? This was an unexpected add-on to financial aid yesterday and Iā€™m curious if it will be renewable.

When do the SCA scholarships come out? Nothing was on the financial aid portal.

Weā€™re in the same boat as you. No FA so REALLY hoping on getting some scholarship $. Lots of help
and scholarships at Chapman though.
