USC Columbia 2nd Review/Deferred students 2023

I just got my deferment letter Saturday the 29th. Dated the 11th.

My daughter just got her ā€œsecond reviewā€ letter today in the mail. It was dated December 10th. Three weeks to reach CA? Wow!

@bjo114 @ruth59 - the letter was dated Dec 10 we gotā€¦but the postmark wasnā€™t. It was put in a bulk mail with no post date. Iā€™m guessing they were mailed out after Christmas based on the timing of other things we have gotten from SC.

We have not received our second review letter yet here in PA. My son just told me that UofSC is his #1 and he wants to wait to hear from them before making a final decision. He has been accepted to 5 other schools and 3/11 seems so far away and pretty late in the game to make that final decision. Does anyone know if they make any determinations prior to that date?? After the way this whole thing was handled, Iā€™m not sure I even want him to go thereā€¦ugh!!

So, I just got my informed delivery notification and apparently the letter is in the mail today

@MB2231 completely understand. My daughter applied to many schools, most EA, but 2 she applied RD. The wait stinks. Especially since the EA for University of Miami donā€™t start until the end of the month or February. But they have until 01MAY to make their decision. And that is rough for ones that like to plan way ahead and/or parents like us.

My understanding is they do rolling decisions over the next three months. So you could here anytime from here until end of March. A kid I used to coach was accepted last year and he didnā€™t get his yes packet until the first week in April. I kind of expected my son to be deferred. What I didnā€™t expect was a friend of his that applied regular decision to get accepted before Christmas with a lower GPA and SAT score. Seems like they should make some sort of disclaimer that unless your GPA is x and your SAT scores are Y then it would be better and sometimes faster to submit regular decision.

Our thoughts exactly. The way decisions were handled was very stressful and poorly executed.

We received letter dated 12/10 on 12/29 in NC (abt 2 hrs 15 mins from school).

Yep. Same here. We also live in NC and the timing of the letter for us is the same.

Received letter the other day finally. Still very disappointed in the fiasco and it has definitely pushed SC to the bottom of the list for us. This was not the first year they sent out notification announcements so no excuses in my opinion. I can write a letter today and date it 12/10 and say, ā€œOops, post office mix upā€ too but that doesnā€™t excuse the unnecessary anxiety and embarrassment caused in waiting all those days before they acknowledged the issue and took responsibility and updated the portal.

On the other USC board someone said they called to check on rolling admission and was told directly only honors class students will have rolling admissions between now and end of Feb. Non-honors students will not hear back until late Feb/early March

The Common Data Set published by USC for 2017-2018 shows 18,811 students were accepted, 562 students were placed on a deferred waiting list, and eventually 3,262 enrolled. Out of the 562 deferred students only 1 was admitted :frowning:

blarney5683 being placed on a deferred waiting list is not the same as being selected for secondary review.

Deferred
out of state - NC
3.96 GPA
23 ACT
1220 SAT
All AP/Honors

we just received the Secondary Review letter dated 12/10! Also got an email about financial aid status only to log on to to have it say it was unavailable at this time. portal remains the same. ?

Got the same email about financial aid - portal is still the same for us BUT, I was able to actually get into the financial aid status - used to say unavailable but now able to log in to the self service and see all of our information. Wonder if it that means anything at allā€¦ maybe still a small glimmer of hope?

i was thinking the same thing! but the only info i see is that they have our FAFSA. no package info.

does yours say ā€œNo award information is available at this timeā€?

yep
