USC Fall 2011 STATS ONLY DECISIONS

**Decision: Accepted! **

Date applied: In January sometime before the regular deadline, aka not the scholarship deadline
Date decision postmarked/received: March 24th, 2011
Accepted at which school/major at USC: Marshall’s School of Business, Business Administration

Stats:[ul]

[li] SAT Total: 2250 M:740, CR: 740, WR: 770,
[/li]

[li] SAT Subject Tests: MATH IIC: 740, BIO(M): 760, LIT: 730
[/li]

[li] GPA-UW/W: 3.7/4.2
[/li]

[li]AP/IB classes: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Studio Art, AP Psychology, AP Literature, AP Environmental Science
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Essays: Very strong; I chose the overcoming challenges prompt and wrote about my summer internship at a Stanford stem cell/cardiovascular lab that challenged both my intellect and my morals. I also wrote about ten years of art experience and how that’s taught me to appreciate a different way of looking at life.
[/li]

[li] Teacher Recs: Very strong, I had two letters from teachers who I regularly converse with and I had them for tough classes. I also had a letter of rec from my professor at Stanford.
[/li]

[li] Counselor Rec: Not too sure about this one, our counselors deal with about 200 students each and the rec tends to be pretty generic.
[/li]

[li] EC highlights: Co-Founder of various organizations such as our school’s TV Station where I’m Director of Journalism (VP), I work as an advertisement manager for our school’s self-funded student run newspaper (24 page papers on average, half in color) and bring in 2000 dollars of revenue per month, Stanford Summer Internship, 400+ Community Service hours devoted to working with kids, National Honors Society, Tennis player, 10 years of art + numerous awards. There’s more but I can’t really recall off the top of my head… [/ul]
[/li]

Location/Person:

[li] State or Country: IN/IN
[/li]

[li] School Type: Public
[/li]

[li] Ethnicity: Asian
[/li]

[li] Gender: F
[/li]

[/ul]
Other Factors, hook?: National Merit Finalist

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: As an in state student, I have to say that the UC system is completely screwed. The acceptances this year were ridiculous and weirdly skewed, with a large majority of the people accepted being from out of state… not to mention the lack of money and the difficulty to get classes, let alone change majors. I think I’m going to go to USC with a half ride from the National Merit Presidential scholarship, just because it’s around the same price as a UC and I think I’ll have a better academic opportunities here than at UCLA. Plus only Cal’s Haas is better than Marshalls from what I’ve been accepted to so far… it’s a tough call. But we’ll see.

Decision: Rejected

Date applied: By the deadline, don’t remember the exact date
Date decision postmarked/received: 3/26
Accepted at which school/major at USC: College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences

Stats:
SAT Total: 2200, 780V 700M 720W (only took it once)

ACT: N/A

SAT Subject Tests: 700 Lit, 730 Math I

GPA-UW/W: Don’t really know. Transferred Schools after my sophomore year, and the new school doesn’t blend the two. Between 3.8 and 3.9 with positive grade trend, as had a 4.0 first semester of Senior year.

Rank: School doesn’t rank

AP/IB classes: AP BioMed (unique spin on AP Biology from my school, included 9 week Histology Research Project, a Biomedical Expo, and study of medical ethics. This was a two-period class), AP Spanish, AP U.S. Gov’t and Politics, AP Statistics, AP Physics. NOTE: My school only allows upperclassmen to take AP classes, so I could only do 5. Rigor of my classes was the highest possible.

Subjective:
Essays: I felt they were very good, if not excellent.

Teacher Recs: Excellent. Didn’t read them, but a Dean from another school quoted them to me in his acceptance letter.

Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, but I believe it to be excellent, we have a very good relationship.

EC highlights:
-Baseball for four years, JV 9, 10, 11, Varsity 12. The State Athletics Association declared me ineligible for Varsity after my transfer, so that’s why I only had 1 year of Varsity
-Highly competitive travel baseball teams since the age of 10. Played with future major league players, many of whom were selected in the past two drafts. Baseball has been incredibly time-consuming and required a lot of dedication, something I made very clear in my application.
-National Honor Society
-Founded a Writing Peer Tutoring Center at my school, where I tutor fellow students and review applications for potential tutors.
-Musician. I play the drums and have been a member of two local rock bands in the last two years.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Washington
School Type: Public for two years, then Private for two.

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Other Factors, hook?: National Merit Scholar? Who knows. No legacy, not first generation, etc.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Initially surprised I didn’t get in, because someone from my school was admitted who wasn’t quite as qualified. After reading the FAQs they included with the rejection, it’s clear that I am qualified, they just didn’t have room. Oh well! A few other kids just like me were also rejected, so I really can’t feel bad about it. Legacy, first generation, ethnicity, etc, just arent things i can control!

@durhambull this might sound really weird, but do you go to eastside catholic?

**Decision: Accepted **

Date applied: Last minute, 11/30

[li]AP/IB classes: Junior Year - Calc AB, Biology, US History Senior Year - Literature, Statistics, Spanish, Japanese, Macroeconomics, Environmental Science
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Essays: Not my best work. I reread it just now and found a couple of mistakes… Still, it was genuine, warm, and really about perseverance. It was about cross country and how I start out on bottom and worked my way up.
[/li]

[li] Teacher Recs: Didn’t read, but my teachers were nice people, so I assume they were good
[/li]

[li] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read, but probably positive, though a little generic
[/li]

[li] EC highlights: Cross Country(9-12)- Varsity Captain and MVP[/li]-Track and Field (11)
-Volunteered with Autistic Children

  • Attended Community College Courses in Psychology, Abnormal Psych, Childhood Development
    -Tutoring
  • National Merit Finalist[/ul]

Location/Person:

[ul]

[li] Ethnicity: Japanese
[/li]

[li] Gender: Female
[/li]

[/ul]
Other Factors, hook?: I got nothing. No legacy, no hardships, no interview. I’m very very normal.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I’m very happy to have gotten in! After being rejected from UCLA and UCSD, my self esteem was starting to take a toll… It is pricey, but I should get half tuition for NMF, and with CA budget cuts, it may be worth it. I see a lot of amazing people being accepted, and I can’t help but feel like my SAT score really helped me out on this one. Right now, I’m deciding between USC and UC. Tough choice.

**Decision: Accepted **

[li] Gender: female
[/li]

[/ul]
Other Factors, hook?: national merit finalist, first generation college student

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: the scholarship letter i received a while back said that all NMF students are guaranteed the $20k scholarship upon admission, so hopefully that still holds. it’s a generous offer, and USC is my first choice, but santa clara univ. offered me full tuition…so right now, it’s a toss-up right now between USC and SCU :[

**Decision: Rejected **

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: Thought it was a long shot, not super suprised, but still bummed to get denied from my top- my first rejection too. Definitely was my low GPA that ruined it for me, oh well. Not going to appeal, don’t really like the idea of appealing anyways. Going to a school that actually wants me :)
