USC film

Sorry if this thread already exists... I couldn't find it so I decided to start a new one... I am an actress and was originally planning on going to college for theater. But thinking it through I am thinking I may get a film degree instead. I am very interested in acting, but specifically for film/tv, that's just where I feel more happy...I don't know it's hard to explain. Anyways to the point, although interested in film, I have never directed or made a film before. Hence, the "portfolio" part of my USC application will be pretty empty as far as past film experience goes. What's the deal with the portfolio? Is it the most important thing? Or can the writing and video submission and grades and test scores out way it? Also, can I put films I have acted in? Does that count as portfolio material? I know USC is a top program. And I have PLENTY of other schools on my list. But I have been interested in USC since I wanted to go there for acting and want to try my best if I do decide to go there for film instead. Thanks. Sorry for the massive amount of stupid questions.

Have you considered going into film acting?

The only school I know that has that is chapman, which I am applying to.

It sounds like you dig acting. Keep going with it. The theater majors at USC get to act in the short films made by the USC film students.

Yeah. I definitely am interested in acting. But I am considering the benefits of majoring in film and having a lot of skills when I graduate. That way I have many job options while I am searching for acting work. But I am getting into film late so I don’t know if I have the skills for the film applications. But I don’t know… I have to make a decision.

Majoring in film is not going to get you a job. If you want to have a career in acting, then train to become an actor. If you want to make films, study film. Neither one is going to give you skills for a job; it’s an artistic endeavor.

It’s more the decision between getting to be apart of the industry I love (film) even if that means training behind the camera through college. It’s something I have to decide after I tour schools and research.
