USC Financial Aid and Merit Awards

Does USC give merit awards /scholarships to transfers, my child got a decent grant award from them but balance left even with loans is too much for us, we wont qualify for parent plus loans so wondering if we should appeal etc or wondering what they usually award. We have an adjusted income of about $85000

Are you talking about USC (Calif)?

What was your FAFSA EFC?

How much are they expecting you to pay?

I know that USC (calif) is a CSS school, so if they are expecting a large amount, then that may mean that you have a lot of savings/investments/assets/equity. Is that true?

BTW…if you apply for Plus and get denied, your child can borrow $4k more…so would that make it affordable?

No savings, own a home but no equity, they have what we owe at about $25000 right now the extra $4000 will take it down to about just over $20000. EFC on FAFSA etc was about $12000. Thinking they are assuming the parent plus loan will cover us but I know we will be rejected and have no co signer

I thought USC met need without Plus loans for transfer students.

I would ask about that.

It’s one thing for them to put a Plus loan in to cover your “family contribution”…

I would ask how they are calculating that your “family contribution” should be $25k with no savings, no equity, and income of only $85k. Your family contribution seems like it should be under $20k. I think they’ve made a mistake…unless they don’t meet need for transfers (but I thought USC did).

How much can your family pay?

Mom2CK, 85K is the AGI (or possibly net income based on the wording). I can see it being above $20K.
