I am not either president or trustee scholarship but i got a mysterious 2,000 university grant…i wonder what that is…so random lol

It is FREE money! Yay!

No offense to the trustees and presidentials…but I’m just hoping my D gets in sight of any money! She’d die for even the smallest $5k, or $2.5k a year. It would make all the difference…to her, and you lucky full riders and half riders are already rolling in it!

Alamemom, do you know if the “holdout” strategy applies to mere mortals too? (Those whose kids aren’t up for scholarships, as far as we know, and have a high EFC?) One son is a sophomore at USC and another just got admitted. I just joined CC in time to see that I might have made a mistake by committing before getting the package (?) or does that strategy not apply to the rest of us? Thanks in advance.

^ I honestly don’t know that one. I know of one student (a rather small sample ) who did a bit of negotiating for a scholarship and waited to commit, and that student received a scholarship, but maybe that student would have received the scholarship anyway. That was also for a major that required an audition, so that may be very different than non-audition situations.

Usually the activity dies down a bit here toward the end of April which is when many of those extra scholarships appear so there are few posts about them. Anyone who gets one - POST! And we will see if there is a pattern.

superdoo,

Sometimes alumni from a school such as Viterbi or Marshall cannot afford to give a large scholarship, but wish to help incoming students. The school will then be able to give smaller amounts to incoming freshmen as the budget permits.

It is a graduate school, but the Rossier School of Education has $250. book “scholarships”.
Those are given out to students per semester to help purchase textbooks. As it has been said every donation counts.

Drats! Third son won’t apply for several years. By then I’ll know to play hard to get :-)

alamemom–

I was awarded a Trustee scholarship, and in my financial package, there is a $2500 University Scholarship included. Is there any reason for me to hold out longer in the hopes of receiving additional money? I’m certain that many people I know who received the Trustee scholarship will not be attending USC, as they were offered admission into Ivies. Do you think this could influence the amount of additional money they offer me?

Regarding the “school based” scholarships referred to above…does one contact the school, or the univ. fin aid office to inquire after those?

UrMOm - Nope - with the Trustee, the max I have seen is an extra $2,500. There is no reason to hold, out, but there is no reason to hurry, either. Make your housing deposit (if you haven’t already) and then enjoy them waiting to hear from you a bit after alllll the waiting you kids dids during the loooooong admissions season!

Mitch, You might try contacting someone in your school or department, especially if there is someone you have met or corresponded with at some point. Express your delight at acceptance, discuss something about your major or school or program that you can’t wait to be a part of, and ask if they have any suggestions about where to look for scholarships - you might mention your parents are a bit worried about finances (or if you are a parent, you can express your desire to make your child’s dreams come true, but are concerned for your family’s financial future). *Everybody come up with UNIQUE ways of saying this - imagine everyone at USC getting these identical emails and letters with alamemom’s wording!!!

alamemom…you know that representatives sometimes read here…remember how the “back doors” were closed suddenly after some applicants had figured out how to find out stuff about admission decisions?
Well, LOL they may be thinking…oh, we need to watch this one! She knows too much!!

Or, they ought to hire you!

Your info is topnotch…a terrific help each year, …even for those of us who still have questions about continuing forms and aid two years after our kids were admitted.

As I was typing that I thought of that! I always wonder if the finacial aid office curses the name “alamemom” as they read dozens of identical letters asking for a bit more. The extra scholarship hint is one I confined to PMs in the past… I probably shouldn’t have let the cat out of the bag I am hoping the flurry of financial aid panic threads yesterday and today will hide this a bit…

P.S. Thanks!

I’m not sure if this is right place to post this but since the merit side has been mentioned in the thread, here goes.

We did not apply for Need-based financial aid, not eligible. But had hope D would have opportunity for at least some merit money. She applied back dec 1 but did not get selected for trustee candidate etc. The letter at that time said “but there are many more scholarships and you will be considered”. Now It’s April 2nd and no word; is merit awarding of all types complete except for the extra 2500 to trustee etc to entice them? My Ds counselor had waxed eloquent about USC as one of the most generous with merit aid, that Ds scores gave her great shot at. Feeling a bit naive and disappointed! :-). Just wondering if awarding of $ to non-trustee etc is now over. Thanks very much for any insights.

UrMom,

Congratulations on your Trustee Scholarship. Many students who are offered admission to an Ivy League university do choose to enroll at USC. When the budget is set for those major scholarships it is expected some students will enroll elsewhere. That does not mean there are “extra” funds to distribute.

Your parents must be very proud of you. Added up the amount of scholarships you have been awarded is about $178,000.

Cvogue5, The USC financial aid site said “early april” for notification on scholarships/aid. I am hopeful that it’s not all done. My D is in nearly the same boat as you describe. “in”, but no merit money yet. Is April 14th still “early April”. My gut says no. So if we don’t hear by say middle of the coming week, we’re going to have to inquire to both the general office, and the major.

i’m so anxious for my package. has anyone who applied on february 2 heard back about their financial aid package?

Are the guidelines the same for Grad school applicants?-I’m pretty sure that (from what I heard) that financial aid package info is sent with the acceptance letter + everything…etc.

I submitted my FAFSA in early January + my supplemental form in mid-February–hoping to receive everything this week. *It says on the OASIS system that grad school applicants will have all the info posted by May 1st, but I’m still hoping it will get sent via mail before then too.

Thanks!!

Financial aid info is up for us in usconnect, and we got nothing but the unsub Stafford loan. We were hoping for a little something.

Wasting, I am not sure the timetable for grad financial aid, but having been a grad student myself (at another university) prepare yourself - grad packages are often entirely loans :(

lenny2 - did you receive an email saying your package was ready to view?

Yeah-I’m expecting mostly loans/grants, but also hoping for some work-study in my packages + such…etc.
