USC Fraternities Breakdown 2011

Is this still accurate: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/696892-usc-fraternity-break-down-5-years-later.html

If not, could someone explain each of the fraternities in depth according to today's standards?

Erm, what are “today’s standards”?

Also, I looked over that list…and honestly, frat situations change every year and are regarded completely differently based upon who you talk to. (For example, my boyfriend’s frat from when we were at USC was called a “redneck” frat on that list. Furthest from the truth at least during our time. It was mostly upper-class music industry, business and engineering majors; I guess having a military themed party makes you a “redneck.” I do know that frat has changed considerably because they were penalized for something…but I’m merely using it as an example.)

You shouldn’t care what other people think about the frats. All that matters (same goes for sororities) is that if you like the guys and find the house a good fit, then that should be the one you try to go for. Who cares if it’s “cool” or not.

If there’s any one you may be interested in, you can ask…but like I said, my “frat” days were quite some time ago and the scene is ALWAYS evolving.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, I should mention all the “rapey” houses on that list (ie: ones involved in pretty torrid sexual assault/abuse scandals) got glowing reviews on that list. So yeah. About that.

Girls: You will also find out very easily which houses are looking to date rape you and your friends and which houses have genuinely nice guys.

So not just a few guys in these houses…but in these cases all of the guys in the “rapey” houses are looking to date-rape girls? Wow. If that’s true…and I’m sure you’ll tell me that it is…then you should report them to the authorities. I’m sure it would be easy to track down a group of guys that all live in one house, and are always date-raping girls.

Oh. my. goodness. Could we have a moratorium on these Greek threads? I want the info, too, but they only seem to bring out anger and frustration.

I think we all need to believe that we will figure the system out when we get there. I know that STINKS to accept, but it’s the way things will have to work out. In the meantime, all of the frats/sororities have websites and they are all very well-made.

Based on previous years, Rush should end by September 1. That gives us 4 months and 15 days until we know where we’re headed. I know that there are so many uncertainties right now, but I guess this’ll just have to be another one.

^^I agree with Victoria.

Um, I just noticed…why when people talk about the frats they leave out alpha phi alpha omega psi phi or Kappa??

I never hear anything about these frats when I ask about them on here

i may be wrong, but i don’t think the african american fraternities are very present at usc. or at least not as obviously present as the IFC frats. So, people probably don’t know much about them. I can’t say ANYTHING about them, good bad, or neutral.

Oh. You go to USC right sclove?

yeah, I’d agree with sclove, most students, including IFC/PHC Greeks don’t know much about the multicultural and professional fraternities & sororities.

I’ll throw my own two cents in and recommend that you all form your own opinions once you get here. I don’t quite know how fraternity rush works, but for girls at least, try to go through recruitment with an open mind, and remember, there are 2-3 houses that participate in informal recruitment after formal recruitment ends.

wisdomsomehow.

I find that horrible. I mean is there a divide between the blacks and the rest of the school?
I mean my self being Black(not african american…I’ve never been to africa, so why classify me as such) I LOVE NPHC sorors and frats! They are just the most entertaining!

My Explore USC hosts told me about this event:

Agree completely with victoriaheidi. The “lists” of fraternity and sorority houses with their traits are not helpful. I probably shouldn’t get so caustic in my reaction…but it’s just so juvinile to do the trait rundown…that I can’t help myself. You’ll get all you need once you hit campi and start talking to the kids…greek and non greek.

Modupe That was sooo kewl! They was steppin on point! lol

there’s a website called greekchatdotcom that will tell you what you need to know if you are seriously interested in this lifestyle. fwiw

Loveispeac3, I don’t really know, it’s not something I’ve looked into very much. It seems like the majority of the IFC/PHC community is white, though some of the houses are more diverse than others. I think the problem is that people tend to get into bubbles here at SC. I’m in a theatre/IFC/PHC bubble, and I’m sadly not aware of much outside of my bubble, including other prominent groups on campus. So it’s very possible that the multicultural organizations are a large force, but at a campus of 15000+ undergrads, I’m just not aware of it. Apparently there was a big step competition at the Galen Center last weekend, and I only just found out about it this weekend, which is a shame, because I think it would have been really cool to attend.

I know! I love [Kappas] this video… it excites me! I doubt I’m pledging, but I know I’ll participate in Greek life, especially events like this!
