Hi! I'm applying to the USC Interactive Entertainment program, and I am freaking out that I won't get in! I know they heavily weigh their decision on the supplements, but I feel that my creative sample for this major is weak. With only a week left until the application is due, my creative sample consists of 2 oil paintings and a couple drawings.

I am trying to create an animation, but I don't think it will be finished in time. IMO my two paintings are excellent, but I am worried that they'll accept the applicants with the fully fledged animations and games instead of me with the traditional artwork.
If anyone wants to see my paintings, I could PM them a link.

also I'm a national achievement semi-finalist. I am mixed.

Please, I need some emotional support. And if you dont think I could get in, then just please tell me why.

I’m in the same situation, waiting to hear back from them.
Sat is pretty good and your paintings are awesome, idk if they really need animation samples.

You have a chance of getting in, but I can’t say if it’s high or low. It is a very hard program to get into, but maybe you can improve your chances in the next few days by adding a game to your portfolio. This can be done if you put in a good number of hours each day for the next few days. I’d recommend Unity, which has great online docs, and this tutorial [Runner, a Unity C# Tutorial](Runner, a Unity C# Tutorial) OR if you want to go native iOS then the Beginning Game Programming tuts here [iPhone Tutorials](<a href=“Kodeco | Learn iOS, Android & Flutter”>Kodeco | Learn iOS, Android & Flutter)

I’m curious, if you’ve focused on other forms of art and never made a game before, why do you want to do Interactive Media?

Thanks. Those tutorials look great! I’ll start on it immediately.

I’ve tried making a game before but I never knew where to start. I have tons of game ideas written down but no solid creations. I really am in love with that industry and I really hope I can get into interactive because of its focus on the cinematic/art side of interactive design.

Nice, good luck. Having taken AP CS should give you a leg up because many IM majors can’t program, and thus create their own projects, until sophomore year, which I consider a hindrance. But I did CS Games If you add this project to your portfolio, keep in mind being transparent about how it came about, such as saying you developed it in a few days based on a guide because you wanted to learn a new dev tool. Then whoever’s judging it won’t expect too much but should give you points for trying.

Having those ideas written down is a good start. After making a simple game prototype to add to your portfolio if you have any time left before submission, writing a high level design doc for the simplest idea could be another good way to strengthen your portfolio.

You do not need a game or animation to be admitted. The department seems to value a broad range of artistic/creative work as they admit a rounded class. That said, pay close attention to your personal statement in the supplement. That’s where you can talk about your influences and vision for the games you’d like to create.

You don’t need a game to be admitted, but it will only increase your chances. Possibly as undecided, but CS Games could be a way to go, they take a lot of the same classes. And maybe you could switch from that to IM if you really want to be IM.
