ModernMan and Kulakai have it right. Frankly, I don’t care much about UCLA above and beyond it being one of several potential destinations for grad school. I think it’s a great university (especially the medical center) but it’s merely one school that USC competes with. Everyone knows about UCLA, Stanford, and Berkeley, but USC also competes for students with NYU and Columbia as well. In the meantime, it seems like it’s the Bruins who are especially fixated on USC’s rise because it undermines their longtime narrative of USC being a bastion for the incompetent rich. No longer true, and we’re only getting better every year. You also don’t see any of us trolling on UCLA message boards. Whatever.

According to Princeton Review, in 2012 USC competes for students with Caltech, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, and Georgetown.

Lol, I’m kind of flattered the bruins and bears like to post on our board. Like Aaron Rodgers and countless others, there are many secret Trojan fans. I’m sure we’ve each met a few. I used to have a stalker on the bears football site that I had trouble shaking…

BTW, 42% of last year’s freshman class graduated from private high schools and 52% came from out of state (38%) and foreign countries (14%).

Seattle, just keep bobbing your head and waving the V sign. I’ll be at the 'SC/Cal game rooting on my Bears to right the past 3 years of embarrassment on the gridiron. :)

UCB, I’m not a fan of Lane Kiffin, who screwed Tennessee (and has now dishonored the team and USC by allowing an ex-con to wear our uniform) and who I believe is not a USC-caliber man, IMO, so if we lose to Cal, so be it!

^ Yeah, happy to see a Trojan doesn’t care for Lame Kitten either… ;)

You want Pete Carroll back?

I want Jim Mora, whose parents are both USC alumni, to be our HC; unfortunately, that is not going to happen anytime soon. LMK and his pop should head back to Fresno State (Kiff’s alma mater) where they both belong. Kiffin is a loose cannon who needs constant supervision to keep his immature mouth shut.

Ok let’s not make this thread about football. Stay on topic.

Honestly, I think it’s genius that USC offers so much merit aid, as hard it is for me to say as a UCLA student. Think about it: a lot of these kids get into top privates, duke, columbia, etc. but they’ve heard that USC is a pretty decent school, has strong alumni, and the weather is great in Los Angeles. It can only lead to a rise in quality students. It’s still gonna rise, but it’ll probably slow down (considering that the common app is already settled in with SC).
Seriously though, I’d generally pick UCLA 99 times out of 100-- but a full ride instead of forking over the 50k they were asking me (tuition, books, car insurance, gas, fees [housing too expensive]) would’ve been tempting

You have to keep in mind, oh humble Bruin, that the UCs are only a good deal in state. Out of state, they are almost as expensive as USC and Stanford but offer essentially nothing in financial aid to out of state students. Considering that 53% of USC’s students are not from California, your criticism of USC and its students applies to less than half of the student body today.

That’s one way of looking at it. Another is that USC may not be as good of a deal for Californians as UCs for nearly half of its student body.

Assuming the applicants are from Los Angeles, only UCLA would provide a fantastic deal assuming the applicant would be commuting. Even with half tuition (which most probably don’t get), USC would still wind up costing over $30k more over four years.

Other UCs, when cost of living is taken into consideration, would end up probably costing as much as USC, or perhaps a bit less. (assuming the applicant is from Los Angeles)

What criticism? Is your hate of UCLA so bad that you had to mock me? Congratulations, you look like an ass.
I was only stating my factual experience. USC is a good deal no matter what as long as they good offer financial aid. What kind of deal is me paying nearly 200k, 25 thousands the semester? I recognize that our financial aid is not so amazing, making that the reason I say that SC’s massive scholarship initiatives and actions genius. Is it so wrong of me to at least have pride in my own school to say I choose it 99 out of a 100 times?

Calm down, Bruin. Vent about Trojans on your own board.
