USC SCA Class of 2023 Discussion

@enzio12907 @drumminggeek87 @ocean2000 I would also love to connect through social media! The main ones I use are Instagram and Facebook Messenger. It’d be great to chat!

@CelestialDreams sure. well what’s your social media?

@ocean2000 My Instagram handle is faeries.flicks.and.fiona_oh.my

@CelestialDreams

I’ll add you on there and we’ll probably make a group chat with all of us.

sure @ezio12907 what’s your social media?

Anyone here applying to Production and CAMS? S19 isn’t sure how to approach the CAMS writing sample (#5, critical analysis). Most of his experience is production, not film analysis.

@romns116 My advice is to lean more toward overkill / impressing vs being anything that can be perceived as underwhelming or too general / generic. My daughter’s first CAMS writing effort ended up being like 2 pages and while well-written, it was no where near as in depth and analytical as her follow-up writing sample. Effort 2, which got her in as an internal transfer to SCA as CAMS, was much better and nearly 8 pages. Effort 2 was clearly more indicative of a college level essay. It later even got her into some writing competition at USC. So I would certainly suggest more vs less. Take a stand and argue it. Make it analytical and not some some generalized review. At least that is my take.

Good luck…

Thanks @WWWard

S19’s school doesn’t have any film classes at all, so he doesn’t have any formal classroom analysis experience - but he’s the motivated, self-taught type. He’s reviewing online film analysis material and filmstruck.

@romns116 You’re welcome. Yes… if he can find some format examples online or elsewhere, maybe he can replicate that template for his own analysis of a film or tv series that has meant something to him. The key is to just make it an unique and strong example of his own analysis, creative expression and writing abilities.

@romns116 I took a film class last year and the textbook we used was Film Studies by Ed Sikov, which was pretty useful in covering basic elements of film, although it doesn’t cover writing structure as much. I took it in conjunction with a college level expository writing class, so if your son has taken anything similar and learned writing skills from that, I would recommend he use them on the analysis essay. The general set-up and type of writing we did was to have a thesis statement about what a particular film element represents (theme-wise), and then in body paragraphs go on to both describe the specific scenes and moments you’re analyzing and the formal elements in those scenes you will be talking about, and then follow that up with analysis of what each element and scene means when taken individually and together.

And, @ocean2000 , @ezio12907 , and @CelestialDreams , sorry for taking so long to respond, but I did finally create an Instagram account if you guys wanted to message each other. The username is just the same as mine on here, drumminggeek87.

@ocean2000 and @drumminggeek87 My instagram is Elijah_Cinema

I’ll add the two of you!

@ocean2000 what’s your Instagram handle so that we can make a group?

@CelestialDreams have you guys made a group yet?

@ocean2000

Yes, but you can still join.

Can I DM one of you my son’s IG handle? He’s interested in joining the IG group, but doesn’t post here one CC.

@romns116 Definitely! DM me whenever and I’ll add him to our chat.

DS is close to completing all Slideroom materials for both Production & CAMS. I’ve watched him fine tune each piece to meet the NCM deadline (11/1). So proud of him.

It’s been quiet here, so I’m assuming most of you are doing the same. Good luck!

Hey,

Do you guys know if we have a limit to add on our portfolio list cause I say that in the slideroom application we are only allowed to attach 9 items of media. So do we restrict the amount of stuff we put on our portfolio list or do we only put the media for some of them ?

@ocean2000

Are you applying to Production? If so, I’m certain you can only submit one video (5min or less).

Yeah I am applying to production.

I am only sending in one video but I’m confused what we do with the stuff we mention on our portfolio lists
