USC School of Social Work Adds Four Noted Professors

The USC School of Social Work will add four new professors. The new scholars will add to the school's strength in social policy and minority issues. The professors have specialties in the fields of child welfare, sociology, substance use and social policy.

Dr. Emily Putnam-Hornstein will leave her position at Berkeley to join the school. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale, a master's degree form Columbia and a Ph.D from Univ. of California at Berkeley.

The other professors are Dr. Avelardo Valdez, Professor Charles Kaplan and Dr. Alice Cepeda.

Thanks, Berkeley!

Horstein is a PhD grad of Berkeley, not a tenure track professor.

Don’t know why you singled out Berkeley in your post. Perhaps because Berkeley grad is very prestigious?

I personally get embarrassed by these press release postings. They make USC seem desperate for recognition, as if it has an inferiority complex

I think these press release postings are reassuring. While public schools are having funding problems, a private school like USC remains full steam ahead.

I don’t see it as a cry for recognition, but rather a signal that USC isn’t struggling like others.

I enjoy reading updates here, which is a place to share info on the current situation at USC. When I visit other CC college forums, I’m happy to read what was new on those campuses as well. Not all schools have regular posters who share that info, which may be too bad. There are more and/or less positive posts on all boards, and I appreciate getting the balance.
