I haven't found a detailed thread on this yet. I'm basing my university decision according to the difference between the computer science programs at the USC and UCSD (computer science is my major). I know UCSD's program is very strong, stronger than USC's, but if USC's is close to as good as UCSD's, then I will attend USC.
I want to know (1) how big is the comp sci program (in terms of variety, classes, students), (2) opportunities in research & how many people get internships at companies such as Google, Facebook, etc. and how easy is it to get interviews, (3) how hard are the classes/professors, and (4) if you are a student, how is/was your experience in the program and how are your prospects after graduation? Would you recommend it?

I recently attended an overnight program last weekend at UCSD and I roomed with a bunch of comp sci majors. They all said they were having a blast. They got to work on projects together and such and it was a very nice program it seemed.

Out of the group of 5 or so people, 3 (that I know of) had internships. One had an internship at facebbok, another at the nearby research institute, and one was going to Cisco for the summer. They definitely exist.

Sorry I can’t answer more, but I’m not a student at UCSD so this is all I have to offer xD.

I was accepted as a transfer at UCSD under CS last month, and I had similar questions about their program.

Check this out: [DECaF | 2012 Companies](<a href=“UCSD TESC”>UCSD TESC)

Seems like a bunch of esteemed companies are on the prowl for UCSD students. The world knows how stellar USC’s alumni program is though. Both seem to be great schools in terms of their CS programs, professors, etc… But my opinion is that scoring decent opportunities at either school is dependent more so on GPA and an actual ability to program intuitively than anything else.

I would definitely like to hear a current USC or UCSD student’s take on this though.

I’m wondering the same. Accepted to both schools though have Computer Science & Engineering at USC (which is the same as their CS program minus one CS course).

UCSD is ranked at 14 for their CS department whereas USC is 21. Though as a national university USC is much higher ranked than UCSD. Also, class sizes should be smaller at USC. I went to the Transfer Day at San Diego and was told their upper division classes are hundreds of students large.

Though I really don’t know too much. I know USC offers a ton of minors such as video games, graphics, security, etc through another department which will nicely complement any CS degree though UCSD offers clusters to customize your degree (such as Software Engineering).
