So I have a problem here... I want to be in pre-med and I have to make a decision between USC and Umich. I live in Michigan, but my parents are "planning" to move to North Carolina, so I don't know if I would get in-state tuition (they might keep a house here). I know Umich is known for its pre-med program, so does anyone know about USC's? I just visited USC and I LOVED it, but Umich's pre-med program is holding me back. I'm going to visit Umich on Sunday. Help!!

How much more is USC over UMich (in-state and out-of-state) for you?

If it's significant and you'll have to resort to taking out loans for financing, it's likely not worth it.

What is so significant about UMich's premed program? I think USC would be a great place for premed as well, they would have just as many research opportunities (maybe even more) and as a private institution your advising would likely be slightly better. Plus, premed is more about what you make of it rather than the school you are at - medical schools care most about your GPA and MCAT scores. My advice would be to visit UMich and then evaluate which school you feel most comfortable at; don't let the "strength" of a premed program hold you back from exploring a new part of the country. Of course, as UCBChemEGrad stated above, also take finances into consideration. USC might not be worth a significant amount of debt if you are planning on going to medical school, but if money isn't a factor then by all means go for it.

USC is really good for Pre-Med. The classes are challenging, but not cutthroat.
Also, you can't beat the weather!

Good luck, you really can't go wrong here.

I think the OP is confusing sciences with "premed program". While UMich is ranked way better in sciences (graduate ranking), the strength of "premed program" has almost nothing to do with graduate rankings. MCAT score, GPA, research experience, and support from premed committee...are more important.

USC=$52,000 total
Umich= $22,000 (in-state)
$43,000 (out-of-state)

Unless you really hate Michigan, I'd pick Mich. It's cheaper (way cheaper at least for the 1st year and possibly the rest) and it has better reputation.

I would go to UMich and save the money.

You are looking at $70,000-$120,000 of savings over 4 years if you attend Michigan. Your parents should keep their house in MI. This is not the best time to sell anyway. :)

Michigan and USC would both be great for premed, so you cannot lose. Both schools have lively and spirited campuses, but Michigan and Ann Arbor are more intellectual and have a more collegiate feel. Besides, should you decide to change majors (many premeds do), Michigan is a slightly better overall academic institution with a wider appeal.

All in all, I think Michigan makes more sense. But wait until you visit it next week and form your opinion then.
