USC vs UT-Austin

I've been accepted to both of these schools (Texas resident) and I thought UT was my top choice because I didn't think I'd get into USC. Now that I have, I'm really conflicted about where to go. I REALLY want to go to USC but it is far away from home and I wouldn't know anyone in California. I feel like I want to get away from home for a while but I'm still a little unsure about going that far away..

Is there any advice someone can give me about doing this? Anyone who has personally gone to a college far away from home where they didn't know anyone? Bad idea? Good growing experience? etc.. Will I fit in at a school like that if I'm not rich? Are people generally nice there? Is it easy to make friends? I'm majoring in Geology and I got into Dornsife at USC, but not into Jackson School of Geosciences at UT (and I've heard it is really competitive so I don't know if I would be able to transfer). I currently have a 3.7 gpa.

So just any advice would be fantastic because I'm unsure about this and I want to make the right choice that I won't regret later. I would only be able to visit my family during winter, summer, and spring break but I've been so close to my family for so long that I think I would like to get away for a while and try things on my own).

Thanks so much.

Are you entering as a sophomore or junior ?

If you don’t mind me asking what was your ACT/SAT score?

They have me classified as a sophomore. I don’t know if that will change if I send in spring grades. Nikkkkki, I’m sorry I should have clarified that I will be a transfer, and I never took the SAT or ACT.

Though UT is THE public school for geology, USC offers a fine program. Side note, I’m also a geology major transfer.

I went to a school across the country, not knowing anyone, and had a fantastic experience. I joined clubs which helped assimilate me into the campus culture and connect with a wide variety of people who had similar interests as me. I moved to Oklahoma last week, again not knowing anyone, and haven’t been able to socialize as easily, but that’s mostly because I moved to OU in the summer when the campus is basically dead.

You will meet people. USC has a huge variety of students, and a very established transfer support system. Go there, get involved, and you’ll forge some great friendships.
