Unless you plan on living in southern California, I would go with Vanderbilt. Also, Vandy has a bigger name so it would be more helpful with getting into a top law school.

Not sure what Vandy's neighborhood is like, but USC's isn't the safest. And the off-campus atmospheres probably couldn't be much different: It's Hollywood vs. Dollywood. People seem to either love or hate LA. If you like LA, then USC's your place. If you think LA is overcrowded, superficial, and devoid of sincerity, then spending 4 years in the heart of it would be torture.

I dunno, Nashville seems to be turning into an mini-LA in the South. The music industry has a strong presence in Nashville, and I think it's starting to be more than just country (Dollywood, btw, is in Gatlinburg, TN). The auto industry is getting big here, and Nissan is moving it's US headquarters from LA to Nashville. And don't forget the bad driving and the total dependence on the car (but that could go for any Southern city).

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far...

The thing is: I actually do like LA (I lived there for a while, though not anymore). So just based on environment and such, I'd love to be in SoCal, though I've never been to the south, so I don't know much about Nashville.

My dilemma is that I think Vandy has a better academic reputation, and that also matters to me - I want to be challenged, and I want to get into a good law school.

USC is not a bad school, though. You wouldn't hurt yourself going there; in fact, I'd say that USC has more "brand-name" recognition that Vanderbilt.
