USCGA and Coast Guard presence at Boy Scout National Jamboree

My son called from the Jamboree to report that there was a recruiter from the USCGA at the Boy Scout National Jamboree and that he had a chance to speak with him briefly. I don't know if the representative of the Academy was recording names but I sure hope he noted my son's enthusiasm for the USCGA and the Coast Guard! He also had a chance to speak with a CG helicopter crew that flew in to the Jamboree and he was very impressed with both the crew and the aircraft. He said the pilots couldn't say enough positive things about the Academy and life in the Coast Guard. Finally, he told me that the Coast Guard had a firing range using laser-equipped versions of the standard sidearm (SIG Sauer P229) and rifle (M-16 or similar) for the Scouts to try and he posted perfect scores with both. I know none of this counts toward his application but it did give him a little added enthusiasm as we head toward his application... as though he needs any more encouragement! He's definitely, completely, 100% committed to the Academy and I just hope it all works out for him.

Hopefully your son has created a profile on the USCGA website by now. If they have his email address, he is sure to get notices about upcoming events in his area or opportunities for on-campus visits.

The representative from the USCGA was not a recruiter, he/she was either an Admissions Officer (active duty CG officer assigned to the USCGA) or an Academy Admissions Partner (volunteers from retired CG, USCGA alumni, parents of cadets, and others with an interest in promoting the USCGA).

There are plenty of AAPs in western PA who visit high schools, college fairs, and congressional events, as well as conduct admissions interviews with prospective cadet candidates and present appointments at HS graduation ceremonies.

If your son has any questions, he should contact his AO (listed on the CGA website) or find his local AAP (send a pm to me or Bossf51 and we’ll get you their contact info).

Look for the application to hit the CGA website sometime in September.

I read that Admiral Burhoe was there…can’t get much higher up the food chain than him. :)
