I am currently a graduate student in the IEOR department looking for a 4 unit class to take and was deciding between one of the two, math 170 or cs61a.

It would be really helpful if someone who has taken either of these two classes to comment on if a) the class is useful in terms of material b) how difficult the class is/ time consuming

I took cs61a last semester and I would say it’s both pretty difficult and time consuming (in terms of A-range mastery). Partly because it’s pretty fast paced. But at the same time I found it to be really rewarding, as someone who is looking to become a good programmer.

Basically, after 61a you will be able to learn other languages very quickly, because you will understand the basics of (modern) computer programs pretty well. In essence it gives you a really solid foundation for moving forward & programming, should you choose.

When registering for 61A on telebears does one have to go to their signed up lab and disc or do they not care which one you attend? What about the lecture time too? There are 2 lecture times but both taught by the same professor.

For 61a it doesn’t matter which lab & disc you go to because they’re totally optional (not for grade). But if you want to get your exam back you’d need to go to your assigned section, since your assigned TA grades them. You can also go to whichever lecture you want; they’re both exactly the same. Or you could just skip lecture and view the webcast like some people.
