I am hoping to become a biology major at UChicago, and I have a question about using AP credit. I would be able to take the AP 5 sequence due to my AP Biology credit, which I would definitely do if I was to attend UChicago. Also, I will mostly likely be able to receive AP credit for Chemistry, Physics, and AB Calculus. Would it be recommended that I use it? I am unsure that I would be prepared for the higher level classes if I use my AP credit to bypass the introductory courses. I would really rather not take physics courses in college and would like to use my AP credit for this reason, but I am not sure about how important physics is to upper level biology courses? If anyone could shed some light on using science AP credits as a biology major, it would be appreciated! Sorry about the long post!

I would definitely use the credits for AB Calculus. Are you a pre-med? If you are, you should check with the medical schools you are interested in. I know many medical schools would not accept AP credits for chemistry, physics, and/or biology, or would ask you to take one higher level class for every credit you receive as a substitute. If you are a pre-med, I would strongly advice against using those credits, but some misinformed students would tell you otherwise. If you are not a pre-med, I would grab all of the credits and run.

There’s ^ that, and then keep in mind that dropping down a level is always an option if you find yourself considerably behind the other students in your class. You’re not locked in once you make a decision regarding how to use your AP’s.

I am not pre-med; I am hoping to go to graduate school for biology though.

Honors chem sequence is a good one, although rather theoretical.

The calc placement test should give you some guidance regarding calc. Neither honors chem nor honors o chem are particularly mathematical.

My D placed out of all calc and used AP credit for physics. She was a bio major and did uber fine in her chem courses as well as her bio, so I would not sweat it. And as others have said, there’s movement among classes early on each quarter.

Thanks for the advice!
