So, I've been the singer and main songwriter for a band for over a year now, and I believe that our music is genuinely good. We've played several shows (probably about 12) and I promote the crap out of our music on the internet.

However, now that I'm in college, I'm wondering how I can use this new frontier to take my band to the next level. Is it possible? What exactly can I do? Can you think of any bands that got famous from being at a college? I just sent an e-mail to my school's director of concerts letting him know that we're down to play anything. Any other cool ideas?

Bands from ivy league schools have a bit of shortcut. Press always likes to mention that Vampire Weekend formed while all the members were students at Columbia.

Rivers Cuomo got a lot of press for going to Harvard - when his band wasn't getting any. The singer of Semisonic is a Harvard grad. etc

Odds are your college will have at least a dozen opportunities for you to play on campus every year. Use them. Try to get on the bill with bigger artists who play at your college. Get your college radio station to play the music, etc.
