My son got his access code to naviance, but we can't figure out how it "works".
Supposedly you are supposed to be able to see how students from your school with various GPAs, SATs, etc did in admissions at each college. but we can't find any of this information.

There's a "family connection" page with tabs for "home", "colleges", "careers", and "about me". what tabs are supposed to lead to the data/ scattergrams/ whatever that we are looking for? How do we get to it?

Does he need to enter his own grades, or does that get doen by the school?

In short, how does one go about using this thing?

mony: go to colleges…then you can either use the scattergrams or the lookup feature to look at what you are seeking; your son doesn’t have to enter his info; you can extrapolate on the scattergram graphs…

a couple of caveats:

if your school does not record early decisions on naviance
if you have weighted/unweighted GPA’s (if you are unweighted, can’t assess rigor)
if above has changed within the time period of Naviance, points will not be accurate…

come back with more questions if you’d like after you explore.

You go to colleges, search for the college that you are interested in and on the college page, there will be a link to the graph/data/scattergrams.

Some of this info may not be very useful if not many students have applied there from your school.

My school entered in my test scores and grades.

In conclusion, it’s useful for schools that have a lot of data from previous years. If not, then it’s not useful at all.

when I hit the “Colleges” tab, the choices on the next sheet are:
My colleges
colleges I’m thinking About
colleges I’m Applying To

College Research
college Lookup
College Search
College Resources
college Maps

Scholarship & Money
(three tabs under that heading)

I used “College Lookup” and “college search” to find particular colleges, but when I get to them the information that shows up is just generic, no scattergrams or data particular to his school alone, at least not that I saw.
maybe I’m missing a step?

what is the tab/ keystroke sequence to have a scattergram or applicant data from your high school show up?
Take any college as an example.

In my version of Naviance, there are 9 links under College Research. One of them is Scattergrams.

If you don’t have that, try clicking the top link that says “colleges I’m thinking about.” That will take you to a new page. On that page, scattergrams is listed in the shaded panel on the left side of the screen.

While you’re on that page, click the link that says “+ add to this list” and add a few colleges. Then come back to that page and click “compare me,” and it will compare your son’s GPS and test scores to averages for each of the schools in the list.

If you don’t see the scattergrams option in either of those places, it might not be available at your school.

When I hit the “college lookup” option then I enter, say New York University into the
“look up by name” box, this leads eventually to a page about NYU that has only generic information.

I see no “How You compare” section on this NYU page. There are links on the page, but none appear to be for school stats and graph. And I see no tab anyplace for scattergrams.

Seems like his school isn’t providing the full package, evidently we do indeed need to check in with the guidance department.

Perhaps his school hasn’t entered data yet. At DD’s high school, there were several schools that she was interested in that no one had previously applied to, so no data. Another downside of Naviance–if you ever get it to work the way you want it to work–is that there are no indications for athletes or other hooks that might have influenced the admissions decision for a lower performing student. DD’s school had a great lacrosse program, and lots of girls were recruited.

Just met with his guidance counselor, so now we know.

They do have the Naviance data, but the counselors restrict access to it due to privacy issues; students can figure out the identities, hence scores, etc, of some of the seniors. Consequently students may access the database but only at the counseling office.

Results from this past year will be entered by later this week.

They give us instructions for accessing naviance from home, but really without access to this data it doesn’t seem very useful to us.

They also use it for the kids to enter some personal biography information for the counselor’s use, it seems.

I know that our high school restricted access only to the colleges where a single student was applying since it would be easy to figure out identities. However, when there were multiple students applying to the same college, they provided the data for the last 5 years.

I guess each school has a slightly different policy. Good luck in your search
