What a thrill for the cadets chosen and for their families this must be... here's the new announcement from the usma:

WEST POINT, N.Y. Cadets from the U.S. Military Academy will march in Tuesdays 56th Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., in honor of President-elect Barrack Obama. The parade will begin at 2:30 p.m.

First Captain Cadet Benjamin Amsler of Titusville, Pa., will march with the Army staff. Deputy Brigade Commander Sarah White of Cary, N.C., will lead the Corps of Cadets contingent of 89 cadets. The cadets will be the first unit marching under arms. The parade route runs from the intersection of Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues and will then continue to the White House. The cadets marching in the parade were chosen by a team of evaluators based on their marching prowess and military bearing.
This is the 24th time that the Corps of Cadets has marched in the Inaugural Parade. Cadets have been participating since March 2, 1873, the second inauguration for President Ulysses S. Grant, a West Point graduate.
Among those marching in the March 4, 1913, parade for President Wilson was then Cadet Dwight D. Eisenhower; and, in the 1953 and 1957 parades, it was Eisenhower the cadets honored.

Seems like this year was a great year to be at the USMA-- with the President giving a speech and selected cadets marching in the inaugural parade!

Do these kinds of activities happen every year?
If I'm admitted, I hope so!

For those who will graduate and go on to serve their obligations, they will be marching in front of their future Commander in Chief. What an honor.

Cadets and midshipmen at the academies do get unique opportunities others at traditional colleges and universities don't. Our oldest son was in the USMA Glee Club in 2002 when they were asked by the White House to sing at the first anniversary of the attack at Ground Zero for the President, First Lady and families of the victims. He will never forget that honor of participating in such a solemn occasion.
