USMA - Jumping Ship?

My son's #1 choice is USNA and a career in the USMC. He's also applying to West Point. We are looking at a number of possible scenarios and how they may play out. He recently raised an interesting question: Has anyone in the past, been accepted to and attended WP and, while a plebe, succeeded in getting a USNA appointment? Not sure if this has been succesfully accomplished (or even attempted) in the past. I imagine that if this is attempted the applicant would need to be very careful about choosing who to confide in. I know this is done routinely at places like VMI, the Citadel

If your son's ultimate goal is to be a Marine officer, then he should apply to USNA and NROTC-Marine Option (as a back-up).

Technically, you could apply to USNA from USMA or try for an interservice transfer, but I am sure that both of these are not easy processes. I am also sure it would be easier to stay under the Department of the Navy altogether.

My son's roommate his plebe year at WP transferred to the USAFA after his plebe year. I guess he liked being a plebe.

I am NOT a fan of people trying to do this. A lot of people would give ANYTHING to be at West Point, Navy, or Air Force and if you go there, then you take someones spot that year. So if you were to go to WP then try to transfer in essence you would have just taken the spot from someone who REALLY wanted to be there. Why don't you just take an NROTC- Marine Option Scholarship if you don't get USNA but want Marines? That was one of my backups along with going enlisted into the Marine Corps then re-applying from the fleet before I got my appointment. There are alternatives and other routes but I do not agree with people trying to transfer between service academies. Also that would mean that the army invested roughly 100,000$ into you for one year, then you turned around and threw it away to join another branch. Either go to West Point for four years or don't go at all. Sorry

I realize your first choice my have been USNA, but there is nothing wrong with going to WP and serving in the ARMY. You are still doing a great deed to your country regardless of where you commission from. I was a cadet in AFROTC, and after the first semester of my freshman year I was medically disqualified from all sources of Air Force commissioning. I am waiting to see if I get an appointment to USNA or not, my college does not have a NAVY ROTC unit.

A good friend of my son's and daughters is currently in his second year at West Point. He is a prior service Marine with 2 tours in Iraq. He arrived on R day in his Marine uniform. His goal is to be cross commissioned in the Marine Corps after his West Point graduation.
