Gentlemen,

For the PPW dance saturday night, will you be in suit or tux? Aspen??????????
(I know, its not a manly topic, but heck---I'm old amd I don't want to be wearing the only velvet green leisure suit there.)

This was an invitation I couldn't resist. :D

Shogun:

I plan to wear a nondescript, conservative suit. That way when I am ignored by all the ladies' whose undivided attentions are rightfully directed at the cadets, I can blame it on the clothing.

shogun - I wore a black business suit last year. I would say there were just as many suits as there were tux's. There will also be many officers in their dress uniforms. In fact I was standing on the photo line with a 2 star general. Interesting fellow.

cough

I know you only want opinions of a particular persuasion, but -

I think it depends on whether your plebe is a son or daughter. Sons - doesn't matter. Business suits may be arguably better - gives your son a chance to shine. Daughters - think you'd want to spiff up in recognition of their dress uniform. Plus, the photos will look smashing (as I recall, the women are in their dress whites).

Just my two cents.

I can hardly believe that my husband is finally interested in one of the discussion threads.

I'm voting for the tux, in spite of the fact that I believe green velvet leisure suits will make a comeback soon. ;) Well, maybe in California!

In California its green leisure suits with sneakers after 8pm!! Interesting thought (son vs daughter), Kate. Maybe I'll surprise (or scare) her with a tux. Might be fun. Coach told her she will likely run x/c at home against Navy that weekend (they race the top 12 in that meet), so we may get an extra treat and get to see her compete. We are counting the days!

Shogun:

I will be dissappointed if you don't include some USC spirit item in your PPW Banquet wardrobe.

Great news about your daughter. Hope she has a good race against Navy. Nice picture of the USMA Women's XC team on the Class of 2009 Memory Page. Here's a link. Shogun's daughter is the one in the running shorts.

There will be a USC pin somewhere on the attire, count on it! OR perhaps I have found just the event to break in those USC boxers I got for xmas! (I know too much info!)

Gee Shogun. If you'd like, I could send you the "REAL" USC boxers to wear. Get ready...... They have "Gamecocks" on them!!!!!!!!! HA! HA! HA! And no, I'm not kidding. Lou Holtz and his Gamecocks OOOpppps now the are Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks. Our bumper stickers read, "Go *****!" Now those are some interesting boxers buddy! Much more of a conversation piece than YOUR boring old USC.

Hey! Why did they bleep me! That is freedom of speech I say!!!!! I'm gonna email the head coach at USC & tell him they bleeped his *****! HA! HA! HA! Just read the last four letters behind Game1234 then! That has to be the funniest thing thats ever happened to me on here. I got bleeped! HA! HA! HA! Bet my husband wishes he could block out what I say that easy. LOL LOL

USC---THE University of Southern California

As the Highlander said, "There can be only one!"

:)

For the sake of my honor......

Any sports fan worth his "salt" knows that the South Carolina teams are known as the -----(what you said) so don't feel bad. I remember the first time I heard that on a sports broadcast back in the 60's...I almost fell off my chair.

Go with a tux, of the more conservative variety, if only for the photo ops. Don't worry about "outshining" your cadet ... full dress gray can hold its own. All the officers will be in Army blues with black bow tie or in mess dress, if they have it. Wearing a tux honors your cadet and the occasion. It's not "unmanly" to do that.

A hint: I have a tux because in a previous job I had to attend frequent formal rubber chicken events. If you don't already own one, you might check thrift shops and if you find one in good shape, buy it. You'll definitely want one for the firstie year events ... Ring Banquet and Graduation Banquet and may find that a thrift shop tux costs no more than three rentals.

We bought thrift shop tuxes for our sons who sang in a choral group in high school that required them. The group had a fairly reasonable rental arrangement with a local shop, but we found that it cost about the same to buy them and have them tailored ... did it twice in four years to accomodate growth. Once you own a tux, you may be surprised how often you can use it. For our sons in high school it meant being set up on last minute blind dates with girls at other high schools by friends who knew they wouldn't have to go out and rent tuxes. Sounds like a scary prospect, but it generally worked out well and one son actually met a girl that way who he dated the last year of high school and through much of West Point. He still sees her occasionally.

Also, the conservative styles of tux never go out of fashion, so you will be able to use it for years, if not decades.

USC = University of Spoiled Children

When you win all the time it's hard not to feel spoiled sometimes!!!

Is it any wonder our kids are as competitive as they are? HA! Shogun, you're such a good sport. What a come back!

Had a comment about Laxdad's post. Great idea! Your thrift shops must be more trendy than ours down here though. :) Thought I'd throw this out there: One of my son's friends had so many formal functions to go to his senior year and first year of college that he'd gone on ebay and had gotten a really great classy tux. Said it cost him as much as one rental had. It was one of those timeless ones. Just black & white. He'd used his measurements from the first tux rental to make sure of the fit. I thought it was such a great idea. Good luck to you Dads! "Whatever will I wear?" isn't just a lady's question to these important functions.

I shudder to think what kind of "Tux" we would find in an Alaska thrift shop! Probably a puffin skin (we don't have penguins at the north pole, that's our friends to the south!) but I am sure it would have received very little use! Alaska formal is Carharts and bunny boots, and if you have to ask, you just can't imagine...

Well, we broke down and rented a tux for our 15-year old son for ppw. I wanted to buy him a suit this week, but he'd likely grow out of it before next weekend. I tried to talk him into the green velvet, but he said only if we were going to California. ;)
