Does anybody know the title of the book the plebes are always holding in front of their faces? Is it possible to get a copy of the book before reporting in day?

Bearings Book and no

My son got in USMMA 4 years ago, but got injured during the pre-swearing in part and dropped out since he would have had to make up PT the following summer and didn't want to do that. I'll check to see if he still has the book and wouldn't mind giving it up. Send me Personal Message.

Native NJ, you really shouldn't give that bearings book away. Either keep it to yourself or destroy it. Nobody deserves an unfair advantage

Seems very wrong to me, IMHO. anyway, don't they change the book every year?

Part of the whole learning experience is memorizing the book yourself. You are going to learn it if you like it or not. There is no point to "give yourself an advantage"

If you really want the book I see no reason to not try and get one. It's not like it holds secret knowlege. The person will probably not spend the time it takes to memorize it as needed prior to reporting and if they have memorized it and show it by spouting off all the knowlege right away they will simply be zeroe'd in on by the DI's.

In all seriousness I wouldn't bother trying to get the book unless you're just interested to see what all is in there. I wouldn't spend the time trying to memorize it. Enjoy the few weeks you have left between HS grad and KP indoc, don't waste it memorizing the Bearing's Book.

FYI, any DI who meets a candidate who already knows the bearings book is going to go after him or her constantly. I know I would make a huge deal about it and be relentless about how this 1 candidate thinks he or she is better than everyone else. Its up to you, but I would make it more than obvious that taking any shortcuts or special advantages is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Furthur more, No one likes a know it all.

from this ancient mariners perspective. The advice given is sound. You will be shooting yourself in the foot by getting one early.

coming from someone who was actually a drill instructor....to be honest it doesn't matter that much from our side of things. it just makes things a little less frustrating and we can use it to make the platoon look good sometimes. on the other hand...your classmates might find it annoying

we would rather you come in good shape and not be injured and sick chit it through indoc

yea honestly...indoc is what 17 days long...and from what I remember they made you memorize stuff out of there...but it just didn't seem as stressed as other stuff like...marching!

after indoc you can study the book for the knowledge tests on sunday night, on your own time. so who cares get the book, its not going to matter if you know it before hand or not, and you can always play dumb.
