Hello, I am candidate for the Class of 2018 at USNA. I have been waiting to hear back for a while, but just the other day I discovered that someone (a recruited swimmer) from my district received his appointment. In the article online, it said he was nominated by the same congressmen as me. Being that this congressmen is my only nomination source, do I still have a chance at an appointment? Since I did not "win" my district, is there really no other way of getting in ?

USNA will notify you if and when they decide that you definitely are no longer considered a viable candidate.

You do still have a chance. The academy knows all of the “ins and outs” of this process and works hard to offer appointments to all well qualified candidates. For example, the superintendent of USNA can nominate 50 students from the nation at large. Often this is done for cases such as yours, where two excellent candidates come from the same congressional district. Also, that swimmer might decide to not accept the appointment.

So, don’t give up. I hope you have a good “Plan B” such as the NROTC scholarship, or even another academy. Plus, remember you can apply again next year. This does work. Many midshipmen go to the academy after their freshman or even sophomore year.

Good Luck!

How could this Congressman be your “only” source of a nomination? Doesn’t your state have two US Senators? How about the possibility of a VP nom?

Just because this recruited athlete is from your district doesn’t necessarily mean your Congressman will be charged will his nomination. BTW - how do you know that you didn’t “win” your Congressman’s nomination? What type of nominating slate does he use?

What I meant is that I only received one nomination, and that was from my congressmen. My congressmen uses the competitive method.

Do you know whether you are one of the nominees on the competitive slate? If you are one of the ten then you have a nomination and at this point it is up to the USNA to choose who and how many will receive offers of appointment from that slate. The USNA will decide where/who to charge your appointment after they select those that they want.

Don’t give up hope. MANY times 2+ appointees have come from the same congressional district. When my son was appointed to USAFA, there was one AF appointment, one USNA and four USMA from our district during the same year. Several years earlier there had been three USAFA appointments during the same year. Don’t forget…as long as you’re qualified …it’s not over until you decide it’s over. If you don’t make it this year, take a year of civilian college and try again next year. Re-applicants have a very high success rate in the appointment process. In the mean time make sure plans B, C, D are in place just in case you need them THIS yaer.

Good luck!
