USNA Preparation for incoming 9th grader

Hey, so I am an incoming 9th grader about to attend Centennial High School and am taking all honors along with CAP. I need some advice on things that will help me prepare for USNA and how to get into NAPS and foundations, etc. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

I have a little experience with the USCGA which is similar so I can help a bit. First of all, keeping your grades up is important. Remember that Freshman year is critical for laying the foundation for a solid GPA. The other thing that academies look for is very strong leadership positions (work towards becoming a Captain of a sport, President of a Club, Eagle Scout etc). Find some meaningful volunteer opportunities that you continue throughout your HS career. Make sure you stay strong in the STEM fields when choosing courses in the upcoming years (Physics, Chemistry, Calculus when the time comes). Reaching out to an Admissions Officer early and staying in touch will keep your name in front of them and demonstrate interest. As soon as it makes sense visit Annapolis and go on a tour. NAPS and Foundations are great…apply as soon as you are of the right age. And in your early Junior year or late Sophomore year begin looking into attaining your Congressional Nomination. Most states host information days for all the Academies with congressmen in attendance, this is an amazing opportunity to learn about the process. Also if this is your definite path, look into the other academies as well. Coast Guard is a great option! Besides the academics and extracurriculars look at the Fitness Test requirements and start building your endurance and strength so that isn’t even an issue when you reach the time to apply. One other piece of advice, later in your Junior year you’ll have the opportunity to apply for Boys State…the Academies tend to like seeing kids attend Boys/Girls State so try to get nominated if at all possible. Best of luck to you! The fact that you are thinking about this already means you are well on your way to a future appointment.

I am going to the Naval Academy preparatory school. So if all goes well i will be USNA class of 2022. First of all its great youre already thinking about it. My advice in short is;

  1. The usna cares lots about math and science. Eventually try to take ap classes, mainly of math and science
  2. Join a sports team! Get in shape now, make physical fitness a part of your routine now
  3. Try to join lots a things, but dont only be a memeber, be the captain! They look for leadership
  4. Volunteer!
