the answer for the mc was definitely effusion

Do you guys have any idea when they will call those who made the Top 20?

They generally start calling before they post the Top 20 online (which is scheduled for May 2nd). So sometime around the end of this week?

Also - the answer for the MC question was definitely effusion. UF6 gas effuses through pinholes in centrifuges that are spun at a fast rate, and since U-238 is heavier than U-235, a portion of the mixture is enriched in the lighter isotope. This is done until the U-235 is enriched to about 4%, where it is then sold as Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) Fuel.

How do you know when the top 20 announcements are scheduled for?

oh yikes… may 2nd is the chemistry AP and announcement of results? oh what a fun day :-)

Groan…I don’t think we’re getting High Honors/Honors results on May 2nd but only the top 20 results. I recall that last year it took a few weeks for the High Honors/Honors results to be posted to the website after the top 20 were announced.

Oh Apoc… that’s a big groan! Well maybe we’ll make the top 20 and won’t have to worry about waiting longer :-)

Lolz. I’m probably not making top 20 this year.

where did you get the may 2 date for posting top 20 online? The proctor at my site, Steve Lantos (part of the USNCO grading committee), said that they’re grading the weekend of april 29-may 1 and top 20 will be informed on may 3, with results being posted online later.

[Chemistry Olympiad Coordinators](<a href=“American Chemical Society”>American Chemical Society)

I’m kind of curious if they grade the entire exam. utsamagoots said that if you are not in the top 150 they don’t grade the rest, but now I find it interesting that top 20 are announced promptly after grading, but honors/high honors are not announced until later. Are they just taking the top 20 multiple choice scorers? Yeah, I know… presumably not, but wondering.

Why does the ACS always bomb my computer??? I tried to go to the above site and the page opens, but freezes up my computer… EVERY time I try to go to ACS. Yep, I’m on dialup.

I got it from the Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator Handbook.

I remember taking the test a little later last year than I did this year (around April 24 last year vs. April 19 this year?) and then getting called on Monday May 3rd.

This year, Monday falls on May 2nd. Im thinking that they will probably call maybe late this week or between Monday and Wednesday next week. Probably next week.

Good luck to everybody!

I don’t thin we’ll get a call today… I do think that Monday/Tuesday is likely more realistic. My phone is broken though, so they cannot reach me (in the hopeful chance that they will try :-)).

If you are at school, do they notify you through email? Also, there are waitlists for camp, so if you don’t get a call on Monday, does that mean you still might have a chance?

Forgot to ask this … is it your local person or a national person that makes the calls?

@sunshine - I know with other olympiads, they notify more than 20, to allow for those who may not be attending. I would think whatever number they choose to notify will all be notified “at the same time” (generally). So probably if you have not been contacted when others have been, you probably will not be.

Hey guys, I got a certificate in the mail today for being a “National Finalist in the National Chemistry Olympiad” or something to that extent.

Do any of you know what that means? Considering that the certificate didn’t seem all that special or anything, I’m guessing it’s just one of those participation things they hand out to everyone.

Sorry, I’m not quite sure; this is our school’s first year of doing USNCO after all, so I’m not expecting too much, but I’d still like to know how I did.

Yes, it’s a participation certificate for doing the national exam.

Oh, alright. In the unlikely chance that I actually did somewhat well, do you know if they send certificates separately?

Then again, maybe it depends on the section.

They will send certificates for Honors (Top 150) and High Honors (Top 50) separately from the certificate for taking the national exam.

Just bumping back up to the first page (at least for the moment), in hopes that we have some activity tomorrow… well, once everyone is done taking the AP :-). Good luck to all my fellow AP’ers :-).

USNCO finalists (top 20) are out.
