^further proof that schools like BC, Michigan, UNC need to be grouped together instead of being “ranked”

rjonkviki your saracasm isn’t appreciated. BC’s academic reputation is stellar thank you very much. and yes BC is a tad better than Michigan.

when is the rankings coming out?

“rjonkviki your saracasm isn’t appreciated.”

Your spelling isn’t appreciated by me either. LOL.

thenatural,

I suppose when rjko makes a spelling mistake it is a “typo”, but when anyone affiliated with BC makes one it’s due to their poor education… :)

thenatural, BC and Michigan are very different types of universities. For them to be ranked together makes little sense. BC’s peers are, as you pointed out, Georges, Notre Dame and schools such as Brandeis, Brown, Dartmouth, Emory, Rice, Tufts, Wake Forest etc… Michigan’s peers are schools like Cal, Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn, Texas-Austin, UCLA, UIUC and Wisconsin-Madison. One of the many flaws of the USNWR is that they lump all those schools together. It is unfair to do so because the they each have very different structures and missions.

But out of curiosity, how is BC better than Michigan.

Ok leanoid, I got your point.

The official release date is September 13th.

[New Best Colleges Rankings Are Coming Soon - Morse Code: Inside the College Rankings (usnews.com)](http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-rankings-blog/2011/08/04/new-best-colleges-rankings-are-coming-soon)

While I agree that BC is more prestigious than Michigan, I also agree that they should be ranked together because they are very different types of schools. The small elite private schools in the northeast are very different from the big land-grant public schools in the midwest.

Looking at that article, I’m much more interested in the specialty lists than the one overall list.

informative, BC is not more prestigious than Michigan. Well, it is in New England, but in most other parts of the country, it isn’t.

I’d agree with this. I’m in Florida, and Michigan is probably looked at as a little better, except amongst Catholics. When I lived in the northeast, it was probably BC as a little better, but I’m sure the Midwest considers Michigan better, too.

DolorousEdd, in the Northeast, I think BC and Michigan exchange leads depending on the area. For example, in Maryland and Virginia, I think BC has a slight edge, but in PA and NJ, I think Michigan has the edge. Michigan also has the edge in DC and NYC. I don’t think either school is particularly prestigious in the South. In New England, BC wins out by quite a margin while in the Midwest, Michigan has a significant advantage over BC. Michigan has a very strong reputation in the West Coast, while BC’s is not quite as pronounced over there. Overall, both schools are highly regarded, but Michigan’s reputation seems to travel better.

When is going to come out?

“The small elite private schools in the northeast are very different from the big land-grant public schools in the midwest.”

I agree that small elite private schools in the northwast are very different from big land-grant public schools in the midwest. My question to you informative is, "What does that point have to do with a discussion comparing BC to Michigan?

the point is that you can’t compare them!

pierre0913:

My point was that Michigan is NOT a land-grant public school. Certain posters on this site, not yourself mind you, are constantly giving out incorrect information. Using false facts and claiming them as truths is not informative at all.

Interesting groupings! Does this mean that Brown, Dartmouth are NOT peers of … Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, or Penn? It seems rather strange to consider that not all members of the Ivy League are de facto peers?

Is there a logical and non-emotional basis to lump Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, and Penn together with a group composed of Cal, Texas-Austin, UCLA, UIUC and Wisconsin-Madison? Are you looking at the Great Books’ Columbia that is located in New York? At Penn and not Joe Paterno’s Penn? Are you really saying that Columbia is more similar to UIUC than to Brown? Are you really saying that Michigan is more similar to Columbia than to UVA or UNC?

If it were not for Columbia and Cornell, I would think this a football conference thing!

Xiggi, I was referring to Michigan’s peer group, not to Columbia’s. Michigan has much in common with the schools I listed as its peers…not so much with BC and the schools I listed as its peers.

IMO I would put Rice, Emory, Columbia, NW etc. closer to each other than to Michigan.
