UT Austin Admission/Bio Department??

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here can enlighten me on the biology dept at UTAustin. I visited the campus last October but no one was there to talk to me about the actual dept. The desk person gave me tons of boring brochures but that's about it. The only direct interaction I had with the department was a girl who was working at the front desk of the College of Natural Sciences. She was majoring in bio and she said she liked it, but that's about all I learned haha. I got the suspicion UTAustin wasn't worth attending for bio, so I still applied but then forgot about it. Now I hear from one of my friends that Austin's bio department is well-known. I had no idea. Anyone care to tell me anything further?

After reading some of the posts on here, I'm amazed to hear some of the stories of rejections by UT. I didn't think it was very selective but reading about ppl being accepted by Northwestern and rejected by UT? Whaaaaaaaaa? That makes no sense. All the admissions lady told me was for out-of-state, which I am since i'm from KS, you should have well in the 1300s on the SAT. She didn't make a cutoff for class ranking for out-of-state but explained the top 10 rule for TX residents and how 90% of the spots are reserved for TX students only. So I thought it'd be really difficult to get in but I heard back within like a week. I only had a 29 ACT and was 44/445 barely making top10%. But then again, my school doesn't weight grades so the students with easy classes with higher GPAs than me would rank above me. So maybe that played part in something, I dunno.

Anyways, about that bio program! I was just going to shrug off my UT acceptance and forget about it, but if the bio is actually good, I'll definitely reconsider. I know I'd have lots of fun there, so if I go jus for fun it better also have good academics for me haha. I'l be distracted enough as it is by 6th St.

I'm still waiting on 4 more colleges to hear from. I'll know everything in 2 days or so. I have no chance at any of those colleges, so I was worried I'd have to stick with Tulsa or KU. I know I want Austin in terms of fun but I can't just go there based on that haha. Sooo, any advice??

By the way, when I applied i marked natural sciences undecided. Is it any problem to declare my major as biology if I do go there? likkke, the bio wouldn't fill up or something and prevent me from attending, would it?

yeah, even I want to know about the biology dept. there. I got admitted to the B.S Biology course but have no idea how good it is. I'm also considering UGA coz people say that bio there is pretty good. Can somebody help me out here?

bio at a big school is bio at big school. Go to the school you like.

Splitting hairs on the bio depts shouldn't be the deciding factor imho.

it needs to be a deciding factor for me.

anyone else have anything on the UT bio department?
