UT Austin Class of 2028 Official Thread

To add to my previous question, my son”s second choice major is ECE and he has written an essay for ECE honors (the prompt popped up in his UT questions in common app when he selected 2nd major) which asks about his goals for the future. This is essentially the same material that he would write for “change the world” essay. My question is: is it okay to repeat the same things in those two essays? Will admission officers even look at his ECE honors essay when making decisions about admissions and his first major?

My daughter was accepted a few years ago for chemE and she wrote her change the world essay about the pay gap and systemic inequality of women in the workforce.

My son this year wrote about inclusivity. He had stories about how inclusiveness on a small scale can work to make larger changes.

What I would suggest is your kiddo thinking about things they have done to effect small scale change for the better (with examples) and then how that can blossom into larger changes.

My son is a freshman at UT. For the “change the world” essay prompt he basically wrote about personal growth tying into leaving things (be it possessions, community, relationships etc) better than how they were when he found them. He also had points on it’s okay to not know everything and asking questions or admitting you don’t have all the answers is how he plans to make positive impacts.

Hi,

My daughter is very interested in UT. She plan to submit her UT application by 11/1 priority deadline. Her time is quite tight.

We have one question about what are considered as the application materials due a few days later, by 11/08. From the link in UT in Common App, it seems that the personal (main) essay can be a part of the application materials to be submitted by 11/8. Can someone please provide some insights into this specific question?

Thank you very much !

In one of the other forums I read that “If you hold a job, upload the 1040 to MyStatus portal”
Anyone has any idea how to do that ?

I believe in MyStatus, under the section “Recommended” there is a “Document Upload Request” that you can upload documents like LOR, expanded resume, certificate, award, research paper, patents filing…

Student needs to finish the application via Common App (essay loaded via Common App), pays the application fee and then a few days later receives UT EID information via email. Then login MyStatus portal to see the application status. Once reaching such stage, your student can safely considered meeting the priority deadline.

In MyStatus portal, student can upload supplemental documents such as expanded resume, awards, certification, LOR, transcript or anything he/she wants the admission office to consider and that’s probably the 11/08 deadline for priority meant.

For all those who are auto-admitted… first of all congratulations!
When do they let the students know their major? Is it the same date as the non-auto admit students (feb 1st )
Has anyone received information regarding their major ?

Last few years, major notifications starting October through end of January. The only exceptions are some small Fine Arts programs.

This is the first time I heard of this. Do you know if I should do this even if I put my job on my expanded resume?

I read this in a Reddit forum. Not sure how authentic it is. My kid just added everything that they did in the resume.

does anyone know if they are doing drops this year for admissions?

Hi -

My daughter is a STEM student with a pretty good profile. She is debating between Data Science and Civil Engineering as her second major. She likes DS a little more, but she is worry that DS may be more competitive. Since it is for picking her 2nd choice major, she wants to be safer because she really likes to go to UT.

Can someone please share thoughts on comparing the selectivity of DS vs Civil E in general? I know this also depends on the specifics of student profiles. Here we just want to compare these two majors in general. Thank you very much!

Does anyone have any insights or experience as an OOS applicant? I know that the university only takes a tiny percentage of students from OOS, but beyond that, any insights into the type of student they accept (e.g. more likely to be accepted with a specific major, need to score above XXX) and if there is any merit offered? Just trying to manage expectations.

Thanks in advance.

My understanding is the UT prioritizes fit-for-major. Very little merit, outside of the big one (40 acres), of which they only award a few each year.
