when do non auto admits start getting in usually?
Anyone here anything this week? Has anyone gotten in who is from non-ranking school or out of state yet?

What is the acceptance rate of students trying to transfer from CAP outside of liberal arts?
CAP students attempting to transfer into anything other than COLA are evaluated against other transfer students. To get into COLA, you’ll need the 3.2 in the required coursework for CAP. To get into McCombs for instance, you’ll need a tougher sequence of pre-reqs (two calculuses and two economics) and more like a 3.8. I’d look at the transfer threads in this forum to get an idea of that process.
Hi! I’m an auto admit to UT and recently it was really exciting seeing MyStatus update, although majors are still in consideration. I keep checking even though I know they aren’t sent out until way later!! I hope to be in BME and Plan II while pursuing pre-med. Does anyone know when Plan II and Engineering Honors admissions come out?
@BelleBlue I was actually the exact opposite! I fell in love with Callaway when I visited my sophomore year, and I thought for sure that I would be staying there! I went on another campus tour this past weekend, though, and I saw my friends’ older sister, who recommended I check out SRD (she stayed there her freshman year and had an amazing experience), so I took a walk-in tour, and loved it! Callaway definitely has more of a modern feel, but SRD really does feel like a home away from home. The community seemed so tight-knit, and it’s great to know that there will always be someone there to help me if I have a flat tire, or electronic issues, etc. SRD also has all kinds of fun events and competitions, and I think it would be a much better fit for me personally! I would have your daughter really think about which she likes more before putting a deposit down (especially because all of the rooms below $17,000-$20,000 at Callaway already have a waitlist). I just sent my photo and deposit to SRD this afternoon, and I’m really excited!
@Mills6 I just submitted my application last night, and was accepted this morning! I’m an in-state auto-admit though, so I’m assuming out-of-state hasn’t heard back yet, since decisions seem to be coming out in waves (auto-admits are considered first).
Has anyone heard back about honors yet? Or do those decisions come out with major acceptances in the spring? I applied to Liberal Arts, Business, and Plan II Honors (my first-choice major is in COLA, and my second-choice is in McCombs).
@lifewithlia Considering honor applications arent due till Dec 1, I dont think anyone will hear from honors decision any time soon. Pretty they wont come out till next year.
@LifewithLia one of my friends got into Plan II on December 15th last year-- they usually wait until you get a response from your first major, which usually happens on the Friday before Thanksgiving Break at the earliest
So they don’t start looking at non ranking schools until after Dec 1 deadline when they have finished with auto admits?
@mills6 my UT counselor came to my school today. He mentioned that all applications are reviewed the same. Meaning that there isnt like a pile of auto admits and non auto. In other words, non auto admits can hear at the same time or before auto admits do. According to him, the only advantage in the application review process that auto admits have is that they have a guaranteed spot at the school but dont get like any major importance or priority in the application review. That being said, it doesnt mean that a lot of auto admits will hear first because usually what the school does is send the first wave of acceptances to the students they want the most which are probably those with a higher projected GPA.
So do they just randomly work through applications or what I wonder? I am not sure above is completely accurate concerning taking who they want first though…A girl from my daughter’s non-ranking school who would be #1 or 2 if they ranked, is a national merit semi finalist, a rockstar in debate and in robotics too hasn’t been accepted yet. She has even done research at NASA during the summers, writes beautifully, and probably had awesome teacher recs. Very nice girl too…wow, right?! She applied about a month ago I believe. I figure if she hasn’t gotten in yet there is hope for my daughter!
@Mills6 Admissions dont begin to be released till late November. I dont think anyone has gotten a letter of acceptance into their major yet, no matter their stats. Last year, the first round came out Nov 20 or so.
Auto admits are getting into UT for sure but not their major…is that all that is happening now? Do schools that don’t rank or out of state kids get in and then get major later too? Guess it is all just later for them? Ugh!
@mills6 That is all that is happening now along with interviews for some honors programs. When admissions to majors start in mid-November, some will go to OOS students and those from non-ranking schools. A large percentage of the November wave seem to get into honors programs (based on posts here in the past).
Watching this forum 3-4 years, it occasionally feels random but my general take is applicants who are most competitive compared to the overall pool for their major hear first. Because the November release is before the official deadline, it is very small. They don’t have all the applications in so they can’t admit very many to a major at that point. The December wave is larger but still small because they have all the apps in but not necessarily all the scores and transcripts. The “holistic” approach to major assignment still uses the AI/PAI scores.
This year will be interesting because the priority deadline is new. The priority deadline in the past was related to honors programs and didn’t promise anything except an early “read.” This year there is a commitment that you will hear by February 1- but I am not seeing a commitment to a major by that day. I hope I am missing it because I am going to have one unhappy kid if he is still waiting after that point.
In addition, there are extensions being given on some items for those affected by Harvey. Not sure how that will affect timing for everyone else.
Our assumption that there will be any waves before February 1 is based on previous years and we do not know that they are still doing that. In some ways I have seen that it is harder for many posters to see other posters get their major and not understand why they are not getting theirs. Releasing them all at once would be better in that way.
Thanks so much. That sounds reassuring! What are the AI/PAI scores? Someone showed me the formulas that UT supposedly uses to figure out kids Predicted Academic Index (PAI? or maybe that is Personal Academic index?) in the book your Ticket to the Forty Acres, but I am not sure how accurate that information is or if they even use that. Is that what you mean? Honestly plugging numbers in using my jr and seniors scores, I would bet it is pretty close to what they will both make if they do as they should.
One other question…do you know if kids from non ranked schools get their acceptance to a major at the same time as their acceptance to the university?
Most likely, students will be accepted but not find out their major unless they are accepted in Honors Program. The PAI and AI are used and plotted on a chart to see which students are most competitive. UT has the AI and PAI numbers down to a science, and It is not a secret that UT uses these algorithms to figure out AI and PAI; however, they have probably changed this year because they do not consider the writing portion of SAT/ACT. Information can be found on UT’s website to see how the scores are calculated. Kids from ranked schools who are accepted because they are auto admit usually do not find out their major of choice until Feb/March. Only about 5% of students find out if they are accepted in the their major (auto/non-auto) early.
