UT Austin Computer Engineering Program

Hello guys,
this is going to my first year in college and i am trying to set up a schedule in myedu.com.
however, i am really confused on what classes i need to take the first semester.

is this the degree requirements???
http://cns.utexas.edu/images/stories/Degree_checklists/BS.CS.CS.1012.pdf

if so...how many core classes do i take per year and how many electives?

what classes are considered core and what are considered electives?

what classes do i need to take? in high school it was easy...u take 4 subject classes and 3 electives. but in college how does it work?

how many hours total per semester?

I also have taken ap exams and received credit for those...how do i take those into consideration when making the schedule?

thank you guys for your help...really do appreciate this
as u can see..i am kinda lost

thank you again
sincerely,

That is a BIG question you are asking. What you have there is the catalog for Computer Science not Computer Engineering. At UT and many other schools, Computer Engineering is grouped together with Electrical Engineering because they share many of the same core classes. Here is their website: [Electrical & Computer Engineering - Cockrell School of Engineering](Academics)
Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, the school of engineering has a very pre-determined course flow (as can be seen here: http://www.ece.utexas.edu/files/forms/undergraduate/2010-2012-prereq-flowchart.pdf). This means that the school has made a curriculum that essentially pre-determines the majority of your freshman and sophomore year courses. If you look on the flow chart, you’ll see that the courses are arranged in columns. These classes are typically taken during the same semester. But, for example, if you come in with AP credit for RHE 306 (English Lang & Comp I think) then you scoot down that path and take E316K.
To make your schedule, you essentially fill it with the right most classes you are capable of taking, the ones you’ve satisfied the pre-req’s for. For freshman year, you want to aim at around 12-14 hours. This is considered to be a light load and the go-getters out there will strive for 15+ hours but I recommend starting light because it really is a big jump transitioning from high school to college and the light load will help relieve some of the stress while keeping your GPA up.

oh my gosh…u just saved me so much confusion
thank you…i really appreciate your help
