UT Austin ECE Engineering Honors vs Cornell University ECE

Hey CC,

I had a quick question about my brother. He received admission in to the Engineering Honors program for ECE at UT Austin and he also applied to the Cornell College of Engineering and if he gets in, it would be an expensive full tuition. I was just wondering about your opinion on what the decision should be. Does Cornell provide an engineering student opportunities that the Engineering Honors program wouldn’t provide? What would you guys do?

Thanks in advance.

BTW we are in-state tuition for UT- Austin

If money matters then Cornell isn’t going to give him anything UT won’t in terms of the ability to land a good job. What will really matter is if he learns the material well & gets good grades, as well as finds internships. If your parents own part of an oilfield and money doesn’t matter, then have him pick the one he’d rather attend.

We don’t have an oil field  but we aren’t poor by any means. Our parents are willing to pay but only if it will actually help him in the long run. My question is… Is Cornell going to give him any research, job, or general opportunities that UT Austin won’t?

If your brother wants to get out of enginering (like head for I-banking), or wind up on the East coast, Cornell will offer some advantage. Ditto if he wants to experience his college life in a different part of the country from where he grew up.

On the other hand if he likes engineering, likes Texas and wants to wind up back there after college, UT is the more reliable bet.
