I have been accepted as a transfer at NYU Stern for this coming fall. Is it worth the money? I can graduate McCombs with no debt whereas I would be in 150,000 if I went to Stern. Post graduation, I'd like to work for a bulge bracket investment bank. I realize my chances at NYU for breaking into Wall Street is clearly better than my chances at McCombs. However, I've had many friends at Texas who still made it to NYC.

That said, is Stern better for investment banking recruiting? Is it worth the money for Stern? How do recruiters feel about Stern and McCombs? What would you guys do?

Stern is much better for i-bank recruiting in NYC. McCombs is better for banks in Texas. Also, are you in BHP? If so, the difference between the schools is fairly minimal. You’ll land the interview either way, and at that point, it’s up to you.

If you’re not in BHP, this is a closer decision, but remember to also factor in the cost of living. $75k in Houston goes about as far as $140k in New York.

Stern is a great school, but by taking on that much debt, you are going to jeopardize your ability to get an MBA, which goes a lot farther than a bachelors. Taking out 40 or 50k would be manageable but 150k is not.

If you want to work in NYC go to Stern. I just finished my jr year as BHP/Finance major at UT. This summer I will (actually currently am) interning at a BB in Houston in investment banking. There was about 12 others who got similar positions (all were either bhp or fap).

Then there was about 6 students who got internships in investment banking in NY (2 for jeffries, one GS, one BoA/ML, one EVR, one JPM).

Albeit, recruiting was tougher than last year (where about 10 got internships in NY), it still will be a long shot. Those guys who went up to NY all had near perfect GPAs, excellent work experience (think sophomore rotationals and even mckinsey), and were great at interviewing.

Therefore, while going to UT (and being in BHP) will help you get into Houston BB ibanking, getting into NY will be extremely difficult.

Grandpabuzz, you don’t know what your talking about. If your not interning in NY at any of these banks, how do you know the amount of people each bank took for IBanking from UT this summer?

Because I talk to people? I also have a friend who works at career services who can see where everyone is working this summer (we are required to report all internships). Yeah, may have been some people who haven’t reported anything, but from that list there wasn’t many IB in NYC.
